Dehydrating foods is another option of storing foods - and it has been a topic that has interested me for a long time. So when I saw The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dehydrating Foods, I was instantly intrigued. The great thing about dehydrated food is that you don't need to store it in the freezer or the pantry. It doesn't require a lot of tools or a lot of know-how and is really quite simple to do. Of course, you will need to have your own dehydrator in order to get started, but you can find those for some pretty decent prices these days.
I have owned my dehydrator for several years now, and have had some experience with dehydrated foods, but just haven't had the ideas and recipes needed to really branch out and enjoy more versatility with our dried foods. We've used dehydrated foods when traveling, camping, heading to the city for a day, at home for a last minute snack idea, for snacks at church and more. There are so many options when it comes to dehydrating and they range from jerky (yum!) to fruit leathers, dried fruits & vegetables, trail mix, make-your-own produce powders and more. Owning a dehydrator and dehydrating your own foods and snacks is an amazing way to save money and provide your family with healthy, wholesome foods.
As I read through The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dehydrating Foods, I was thrilled to discover some really great tips, such as how pretreating fruits and veggies before dehydrating is an important step. My favorite part of the book though was the recipes. I never knew that it was so easy to make my own garlic powder!! I would have started making my own garlic powder, onion powder, etc. years ago if I'd have known it was that simple. Another one that caught my eye was the Banana Chocolate Coconut Leather. Mmmm...doesn't the sound of that just make your mouth water? I'm guessing that this is going to be a new favorite with our entire family. There are more than 80 different recipes in this book that will give you a taste of how fabulous dehydrating your own foods can be. The are great for mess-free snacks with little children. They are perfect for when you are on-the-go, and they could even make some really great, unique and delicious gifts ideas!.
