Hot Potatoes!

I've been trying harder to make a menu plan for our family lately, and it's been working out great. I don't always make Monday's meal on Monday (maybe switch it around depending on moods, weather, etc) but at least I have the ingredients I need in the house. It's been relatively easy to come up with a main dish, but I often have trouble with a side dish. With 3 hungry kids and dinner prep time being one of the hardest times of day, there often isn't a lot of time for prepping stuff, and it's nice to have something easy to fall back on for those absolutely crazy days!

McCain Foods is well-known for their potatoes...fries, wedges, breakfast potatoes...as well as for their other frozen foods such as pizzas, cakes and juices. Recently, McCain Foods launched a new product called Harvest Splendour Potato Medleys. There are 4 frozen potato medleys to choose from:

• Potato and Broccoli Medley
• Potato and Carrot Medley
• Three Potato Medley
• Yukon Gold Potato and Mushroom Medley

In the bag, everything is cut and ready to go. You just have to season the potatoes (seasoning packet provided) and start cooking (from frozen)! We tried the Three Potato Medley first - it was like the story of Jack Sprat and his wife because my older son preferred the white potatoes and my younger son preferred the orange ones (sweet potatoes!), so there was something for everyone. I was doing something else in the oven, so cooked the potatoes in the oven along with the meat. They turned out reasonably well, but I can see why the preferred method is to use the stovetop, and I would do that next time. Looking at the nutritional information chart, I was pleased to note that the potatoes are not high in sodium, something we're careful about around here. The bag (at 600g) was enough to feed our whole family: 2 adults and 3 small children, and probably would have been enough to feed 1 more adult as well.  They tasted great and were super easy to prepare!

My parents tried the Potato and Carrot Medley and they enjoyed the mixture. It was a tasty and quick side dish that was easy to prepare. My mom fried the potatoes in a skillet, which made them turn out even better than ours. They did mention that they thought the potatoes were a bit on the pricier side of frozen potato option. As well, they would have preferred that the red peppers be packaged separately (like the seasoning) so you could add them, or not, depending on personal preference.
