Did you know that according to Statistics Canada, Canadians make over 14 million visits to the emergency room every year?! That's a fairly staggering number, isn't it? Now, that said, some of the injuries or ailments that we are running to the emergency room for could be safely treated at home. But which ones? And what if we're not sure how to treat the injury? Well, DK Canada recently sent us a copy of The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians First Aid Manual. This book is fabulous and is definitely a worthwhile book that any household could benefit from! The First Aid Manual is an easy to understand, full illustrated guide to treating injuries quickly and effectively. It also helps you to quickly determine what can safely be treated at home and when you need to make a trip to the emergency room.
The First Aid Manual is very easy to follow. It includes charts, step-by-step photographs and simple instructions to help with first aid care in over 100 different situations. The situations range from mild to serious and I found that the information given about each possible injury was very helpful! Just to give you a taste of what the First Aid Manual has to offer, a few of the first aid instructions include:
~ How to give CPR
~ How to help a choking child
~ Stopping a nose bleed
~ Handling seizures
~ Dealing with swallowed poisons
~ Dressing a minor burn
~ Heart attacks
This book is the best home reference guide I've come across so far when it comes to First Aid. It's the kind of book you hope you never have to use, but when a potential emergency does occur, it's also the kind of book that you will be VERY happy that you own!
WIN IT!
DK Canada is giving away a copy of the First Aid Manual to one of our readers. In order to enter, please follow the instructions on the form below.

It's important because you never know what's going to happen around you. These skills are necessary for everyone.

One never knows what they will encounter from day to day. It's important to be prepared for any emergency so you can react quicker and calmer when it does happen.
I think it would firstly be very important to read and understand the contents of this book in case of accidents in the home, and emergencies anywhere, and secondly to keep it somewhere very convenient and easy to reach.
I think I would panic in an emergency situation and my mind would go blank. Would love to have a go-to book.

I have two kids and a senior at home and if any accident happen, at least I know I can go to this book to find the important information that can help me

We certainly need this at our camp. We are quite a way from the nearest hospital and often there are no other people around that we could get to assist. We have 2 small children and this would be a wonderful addition to our first aid kit.

I think that it is always a good idea to have a first aid book and a first aid kit. Accidents can happen so fast. You just never know when you might need a first aid book.
I have a baby so I think this would be an excellent resource to have.

This sounds like a great resource to have on hand for anyone who has kids.
I took a class when I was fixing to have my first child. It was very helpful in knowing what to do in an emergency. I would love to have a book to refresh and be ready if need be.

Its important to have a book like this on hand because you never knoe who or when this book will be needed!
I'd rather have this than not. My son burned his hand recently and I didn't have anything on hand. Now I know to have first aid supplies and I need a book as well.

A book like this would be really important to have as a reference around the house because it would save people unnecessary trips to the ER. It would also help to show the detailed treatment of minor first aid emergencies.

very important information to have on-hand in case of an emergency (also to familiarize yourself with prior to such situations), even more important to own when you have children in the house!

My husband is a medical first responder so he has advanced first aid. But when I am here by myself it would nice to have a good resource book too look something up if I needed too. Of course anything major or sever I would call 911 and the hubby.
