Winner!

The winner of three "Lift the Flap and Learn" books from Owlkids

Congratulations! You'll have 72 hours to respond to my email before a new winner is chosen.

Hallmark for Mother's Day!

Hallmark Canada would like you to Press Pause and enjoy life! Each day there are moments to treasure, and of course, the special days make for great memories too!

Just in time for Mother`s Day (next Sunday!!), here are some of the cool things Hallmark has for the moms on your list! Some of these would also make great Father's Day gifts...keep them in mind when that rolls around in June!

Recordable conversation books

What a great way of preserving your child's voice and ideas! Each page in the book has a prompt, and when you press the button, you can record the child's answer! These are available in Mom & Me, Grandma & Me and Dad & me versions.

Recordable photo frame

In the same trend as the recordable books, this photo frame allows you to preserve a treasured photo and a 10-second accompanying message! Regularly priced at $29.95, the frame is $19.95 if you buy 3 greeting cards. (offer valid through June 19, 2011)

Gift wrap

We received our Hallmark spring package in a beautiful gift bag: the Feminine Grand Bag! With beautiful colours and a ribbon handle, this is a great way to present your gift to Mom. There are also special gift bags for Mother's Day in a beautiful lavender with flowers design.

Watson

This is by far my kids favourite! Watson is a talking raccoon. Not maybe your traditional Mother's Day gift, but it will give Mom/Grandma some special times reading with her children/grandchildren. Watson comes with a storybook, and on most of the pages there is a key phrase, which, when read aloud, makes Watson the raccoon respond! The only downside to this is that Watson uses voice recognition software, so the key phrases have to be read in a very clear way. It's so cute but bittersweet to see little Daniel (age 2 1/2) try to make Watson speak to him: Watson, I weally need your hewp! (Watson, I really need your help!) Watson's instructions say that he works best with readers ages 8 and up, and I think this is pretty accurate, as Jonathan (age 5 1/2) has been able to get him to respond a few times but not all the time.

Check out all these and more at Hallmark Canada or at your local store.

Boobles Bottoms

Once I made the decision to use cloth diapers with our baby, I was amazed and, I must admit, somewhat overwhelmed by the various kinds of cloth diapers available. I've been trying Boobles Bottoms lately, and I think this system has a lot going for it. I found the information on their website to be very helpful, and once I'd watched the DVD they've produced, I felt like I understood the cloth diaper world much better. (more about the DVD below!)

Norine and Penny, a mother and daughter entrepreneurial team, are Canada's Diaper Ladies! Drawing on their experiences using cloth diapers, and through experimentation on Penny's baby, they developed the Boobles Bottoms diaper. It's a fontour diaper: Fitted & cONTOUR. The diaper is made of 3 layers of cotton flannelnette, and the insert of 4 layers. The diaper closes with hook and loops, and is easily adjusted to fit a growing baby by folding over the back. For naps or overnight, 1 or 2 inserts can be used, depending on what your baby needs.

Something interesting about Canada's Diaper Ladies, is that they want to make cloth diapering accessible and affordable. They sell their diapers individually, but also as a complete set. The set includes:
  • 36 cloth diapers
  • 48 absorbency pads
  • 21 vinyl pull on covers in several sizes
  • 36 reusable wipes
  • Washing instructions + Cloth Diapers 101 DVD
This would be enough diapers and wipes to get you through your whole diapering experience - which, using cloth, is supposed to be much shorter than using disposables. And guess what - the retail price of this set is very affordable: $380.00 CAD!  Considering that a box of disposable diapers regularly sells for around $35 at our local, cheapest grocery store, this is the same price as about 10 boxes of diapers! WOW!

When I first saw the diapers, I was amazed at how trim they were. They fit Annalies really well, and it's easy to find the right size for her by adjusting the hook and loop closures. There is no elastic on the legs of the diaper (only on the covers), and this is especially comfortable for chubby baby legs. It also makes the diapers much more durable (elastic is often one of the things to wear out).

Both my husband and I have found these diapers extremely easy to use. I like washing the diapers separate from the covers (keeps the covers working longer), and I like that the inserts are separate from the diaper (easier to wash and quicker to dry). The diapers are not intended to be as absorbent as disposables, so you have to change your baby more often, but this helps them to get used to feeling dry, and helps them to train earlier.

The Cloth Diaper 101 DVD is a great resource for someone purchasing cloth diapers, or for anyone considering cloth for the first time. Different kinds of diapers are shown and explained. Norine and Penny tell you all about washing your diapers. They also explain about cloth diapering accessories, and help you to decide what you need.

Boobles Bottoms Diapers are exclusively available at the Canada's Diaper Ladies website.

Cozy to sleep on by Jupiter!

Jupiter Industries may not be a name you recognize, but you might be familiar with Simmons, a well-known mattress manufacturer. Jupiter Industries is a Canadian company, started in 1981, whose goal is manufacturing safe, family-friendly products. They are the exclusive manufacturer of the Simmons crib mattress. They were the first North American manufacturer to design and produce and phthalate-free, vinyl-free mattress. Jupiter was also the first manufacturer in Canada to develop a square corner border rod system. This special design is found in all of their crib mattresses for a snugger fit that reduces gaps between the crib rail and mattress. They've been expanding their natural and organic product lines, and use as many locally-sources materials as possible in order to reduce their carbon footprint.

As well as manufacturing infant mattress, Jupiter distributes several brands of natural and/or organic baby products, and also carries a pet product line.

We received an organic infant mattress pad. Our crib and crib mattress are European, so a different size than what is standard here in Canada, but our little guy, Mr. D, sleeps in a toddler bed, so he was the lucky recipient of the mattress pad! It has made his bed just that little bit softer, and helps him to sleep more comfortably and deeply, which helps us as well!

The mattress pad is waterproof, happily - a necessary feature anywhere a baby or small child is going to be sleeping! It's well-quilted, so the filling stays securely without shifting. Another necessary feature is that it's waterproof - an absolute MUST when you're in the midst of the potty learning stage!

The "skirt" of the mattress pad goes nicely around and under the mattress, helping it to stay firmly on the mattress. Speaking from experience, there's nothing more disconcerting than a fitted sheet or mattress pad "springing loose" in use! :) Once I've put the mattress pad on Mr. D's bed, it's stayed there until I'm ready to take it off again.

Jupiter Industries manufactures quite an extensive line of organic sleep products, and based on our experience, I would highly recommend them if you're making a baby sleep purchase.

For more information, or to find a retailer, please contact Jupiter Industries.

Delta Makes it Simple! ~ GIVEAWAY!

"Sometimes your hands could use a hand." This quote from Delta is sooo true! Especially in the kitchen. I'm sure there are at least several times per day when either both my hands are full of dishes, children, food, etc....OR both my hands are full of batter, dough, flour and are just plain messy! What's a mom to do?? Delta has a wonderful solution - Touch2O® Technology. Touch2O Technology makes turning on your kitchen tap SO simple. No matter if your hands are full...or dirty! A simple tap anywhere on the spout or handle is all it takes to get the water running. Turning it off is just as easy - simply touch it again. Yep, it's really that easy. We received the Pilar Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet with Touch2O Technology®. It is shiny, sleek and is definitely the most practical and easy-to-use faucet I've ever had. It's completely mom-friendly, child-friendly and is an amazing addition to the kitchen!!

There are so many great benefits to Delta's Touch2O® Technology. One of these includes that things stay cleaner...you won't have to use messy hands to turn your faucet off or on! Instead just touch it with your wrist, or your arm...or even your nose (lol :) ). Another great benefit is that these faucets can actually help your water bill go down. It's so much easier to conserve water with Touch 20 Technology since it only takes a second or less (literally!) and VERY minimal effort to turn your tap off and on. Let's face it - when only a touch is needed, it really is a lot more appealing for me to turn the tap off in between even the small tasks (such as washing veggies or fruits).

Delta carries these Pilar Kitchen faucets with several different styles/options, as well as each faucet comes in a variety of finishes....so finding something to match your kitchen and your taste is easy. We highly recommend these faucets - the technology behind them is incredible, and we were very impressed with the quality and design of the Pilar faucet as well. They would be a great addition to ANY kitchen!

WIN IT!
Delta is giving away a Pilar faucet in the finish of YOUR choice. In order to get one entry, head over to Delta and let us know which Pilar faucet would fit your kitchen and which finish you'd choose if you won.

Cute in a Cape! ~ Giveaway!

I didn't think it was possible for our little girl to get any more comments about how cute she was (we think so too!) but it did happen! She's been wearing a cape when we've been out a few times recently, and you should hear people exclaim! :)

We moved Annalies up from the baby bucket car seat to a convertible car seat facing backwards in March. Although we loved the bucket seat for many reasons, ours fits on the small side, and we were just too tired of the struggle to get the straps closed around her round tummy. She was nice and cozy under her car seat cover, and we waited as long as we could, until the weather was some warmer to switch seats, because we knew we'd need to use a jacket or something. Trust me, putting her little arms into jacket sleeves is not a fun task. After a few weeks of jacket wearing, we decided there had to be a better way. Just about the same time, I found out about Cute Capes 'n' Caps, a great little Etsy shop. Ramona, a mom of 3, had the same problem when their little girl changed seats, and she decided to make a cape to keep her warm. One thing led to another, and now she's making capes (and many other cute items) for other little people too.

Capes are available with or without collar. And it's true: they are so much easier to put on than a jacket. One clip (hook and eye closure) and you're done! Adjust the seat straps over the cape and under the collar, click, and go. Easy peasy!!! There are a variety of fleeces to choose from, and the capes are available in many different sizes. Something fun about the capes is that Ramona purchases fleece in small quantities, so that they are either 1 or 2-of-a-kind. Something unique for your little girl! OR boy: Ramona makes capes for little boys too - her little guy wore one as well. Special orders (ie matching capes) are also possible, just convo Ramona via Etsy.

Ramona also makes crocheted hats for children and adults in many different styles and colours. Summer hats, winter hats, traditional shapes or really fun "jester" type hats - you'll find them all at Cute Capes 'n' Caps.  Booties and cocoons are also available.

WIN IT!!

Cute Capes 'n' Caps is going to give one lucky Glimpse reader their choice of cap (choice of style, size and colour). To enter, please visit Cute Capes 'n' Caps and tell us which hat you'd choose.

A toilet for all!

We are in the midst of a fascinating adventure - potty learning! It's filled with excitement, high emotions, motivation, some fear and uncertainty...sound familiar? We've done it once before but it's a whole new adventure this time around! Each child is so different, likes different things and has a different comfort level. I do believe now that we've found one potty learning tool that all the children in our family will use - the Easy Potty Trainer.

This toilet seat has made a big difference in our potty adventures. It's an integrated adult and child-sized seat. I'd seen a similar seat at my brother's a couple of years ago, and I've been watching for one ever since that would fit our elongated toilet. I'm so happy to have found one, and that it's made by a Canadian company is an extra bonus! Our adventure has taken off since we installed this seat. By the way, my husband said it installed very easily, even though our toilet has special connectors, it still went very smoothly.

One seat for the kids, so they're comfortable and not afraid of falling in, or so busy keeping their perch that they can't do their business. Another seat for the adults - no you can't use the child-sized one! :) Both seats lift up and stay up so you can clean the toilet easily - very necessary when little boys are learning. And, it's easy to find the appropriate seat, even in the dark when you're mostly still asleep - our 5 year old can do it and so can I.

A wonderful feature of the Easy Potty Trainer is the soft-close lid. When you want to close the whole seat (not the child-sized top lid) it just drifts down. It's a nice way to reduce the noise. Something else I really like is that you don't have to dump or clean out a potty. And, as our 2 year old just demonstrated so wonderfully this morning, a child can use it all by him or herself! :)

This is the first product I've reviewed that my dad, the super-skeptic, has totally liked. In fact, after he'd seen it in use (our boys like to go to the bathroom with Opa helping), he told me to make sure and give it a great review! :)

The Easy Potty Trainer comes in white and bone, and in both round and elongated styles. It sells for $39.95 plus shipping and taxes. But for Glimpse readers, there's a special deal:

BUY IT!!

Any Easy Potty Trainer order over 2 seats gets free shipping in Canada. If you buy one seat, you'll get 10% off the retail price and a shipping fee of $10.00. To take advantage of this offer, check out Easy Potty Trainer and email John to place your order.

BMO Eco Smart Mortgage Blog Tour ~ GIVEAWAY! ($50 GC!)

In a world where prices always seem to be rising, and where even simple things like good quality food are costing more money, it just makes sense to try to be eco smart! Especially when it comes to our homes...it's amazing what a difference a few upgrades can make in the efficiency of your home. Things such as a good quality furnace, energy star appliances, or even energy star doors really can and DO save you money in the long run. BMO is a bank that understands how important it can be to have an energy efficient home and because of that they have created a new Eco Smart Mortgage that has a fabulously low five-year fixed interest rate of 3.89 per cent! In fact, this rate is even lower than any of the other comparable green mortgages you can find out there.

So, how do you know if your home is efficient enough? Or if you would be able to take advantage of a great deal like this? The BMO website has a checklist that you can download from their website that will give you an answer. The checklist really only takes a few minutes to complete...it's short and simple. :) I went through our current home to see how we rated for energy efficiency in our home, and here were the results:

High Efficiency Heating System - YES!
We have a high efficiency furnace that we put in several years ago - and love it! It has lowered our heating bills significantly!

High efficiency Air Cooling System or no Air Cooling System at all - YES!
Our only cooling system is opening up the windows and letting the summer breeze blow through them. :)

Good Quality Attic Insulation - YES!
We took care of this several years ago and have excellent attic insulation in our home...it's funny how much of a difference we noticed in the warmth or coolness of our home in winter or summer after adding the extra insulation!

Windows - NO!
The Eco Smart Mortgage requires energy star windows with no cracks or air gaps. Our windows are good ol' aluminum sliders...and yep, there are air gaps...mostly tiny ones, but they are still there.

Domestic Hot Water System - NO!
BMO requires a Solar domestic hot water system in order to qualify for this mortgage...unfortunately, as wonderful as it sounds, our home does not have this energy efficient feature yet.

Doors - NO!
Although we have replaced our outer doors, we do not have the type of doors that is required (ENERGY STAR qualified or metal, or fibreglass insulated doors).

Major Appliances - NO! (but soon to be YES!)
Currently we only have an Energy Star dishwasher...all other appliances are older and are probably using a lot of our energy! That said...we have purchased new appliances for a move that we'll be making soon - three out of the four of them are energy star, so we're looking forward to lower energy bills and to a more efficient home!)

So, with a score of 3/7 (or 4/7 if you count our soon-to-have new appliances) we would not qualify for the BMO Eco Smart Mortgage. However, it was a great exercise to go through our home and see what improvements we could work towards in the future to make our home more eco smart! Now it's your turn...do you qualify? How eco smart is your home? Take a few minutes and go through BMO's handy checklist and see what your eco smart score is.

WIN IT!
One lucky reader is going to win a $50 RONA gift card to help you make your home a little more energy efficient! In order to get one entry, share something you are currently doing or some future plans you may have to make your home more energy efficient.

EXTRA ENTRIES - Please leave an additional comment for each extra entry.

Muddy Enough?? ~ Discount!

Kids and mud go together ~ especially little boys & mud! (though I know many little girls who also love mud just as much as the boys do! ;) ) Now that spring is here, there is plenty of mud & puddles to enjoy. Cheeky Umbrella has the absolute CUTEST kids umbrellas, which are perfect for sending your kids out to play on a rainy, drizzly day! Or, if your children are anything like mine, they may enjoy the novelty of an umbrella on any day...rain or shine! The umbrella we received was for our son...he is a big fan of puddles & mud. Getting water in his boots is no big deal...and getting covered in mud, wet sand, etc. just makes things more fun. :) The umbrella he received describes him perfectly. He got the Muddy Enough Kids Umbrella, which has the perfect little quote for a mud-loving child on it. It reads "If you can read this, I'm not muddy enough!" Isn't that just the truth sometimes?! :)

The kid umbrellas from Cheeky Umbrella have a lot of fabulous features. They are made from strong & flexible fiberglass ribs making it durable against weather - and most importantly against kids! The umbrella also has an aluminum shaft which is lightweight - yet very strong. Some of the other great features include:

Evian - eco-friendly!

My favourite bottled water has always been Evian. Of course that's a matter of taste, and I guess it's one I picked up when I lived in France "when I was young!" Did you know that
Every drop of evian® is filtered naturally through layers of glacial sand during a 15+ year journey deep in the heart of the Northern Alps, giving it the purity and taste that nature intended.
Recently, Evian has done something that has improved my opinion!! The water's taste is the same, luckily, but the 1.5 L bottle is different! Much more eco-friendly. How did they do that?
The new bottle, made of up to 50 percent recycled-PET, remains 100 percent recyclable while using 11 percent less plastic to weigh 3.4g less than the previous design (down to 28.6g per bottle), reducing its overall carbon footprint by 32 percent. The newly designed bottle represents an important step in evian®’s environmental policy, which targets a CO2 emissions reduction of 40 percent between 2008 and end of 2011.
This bottle is the one you'll find available for purchase in your local supermarket. If you're dining out, you should notice a change in the glass bottle you'll see:
The brand’s new glass bottle doesn’t just look good, it uses less glass to reduce its carbon footprint:

  • 75cl is 35.5% lighter than our previous 1L bottle
  • 33cl is 43.4% lighter than our 500ml and 6.5% lighter than the previous 33cl
  • Cartons for all evian®’s bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled material.
I received one of each kind of bottle to try out, and I'm really glad Evian has made this decision. Every little bit helps our environment, and this is a good example of how!

Oh Katy! Oh Earth Day!!

Happy Earth Day!! Our oldest son woke up this morning wondering what kind things we could do for the Earth today! What did you do to celebrate Earth Day?

One of the many things we can do to help our planet stay green is to reduce the amount of stuff we're throwing away, and for a family with a baby or young child, that could mean using cloth diapers. Just in time for Earth Day, Oh Katy diapers has a great deal. Read more to find out how you can take advantage of this deal!!
Baby Bellhop, one of the companies who helped us party with the Ultimate Blog Party, is one of the few Canadian retailers of the Oh Katy diapers. Baby Bellhop is an on-line store specializing in cloth diapers and cloth diaper accessories. They carry a wide range of cloth diapers in super cute patterns and colors, including all-in-onespocket diapersone-size diapersfittedsprefolds and cloth diaper covers. They also carry accessories like wipes, wet bags, detergent, and creams. The Baby Bellhop website is very well laid-out, with lots of information to help you make the choice for cloth diapers if that's right for you, and then to choose which diaper(s) to try. Based in Victoria BC, Baby Bellhop also offers cloth diaper workshops for local customers. My experiences with Colleen, the owner of Baby Bellhop, have been very positive, and she's been helpful with tips etc for figuring out which cloth diapers to try.

I received the Katydid diaper for our baby. Since I received it, Katydid has undergone a rebranding, and become Oh Katy. Also, they've improved their diaper, and extended their colour range. I'll tell you about our experiences with the Katydid diaper, and tell you about the changes!

As with most one-size diapers, this one is also adjustable in rise, with 3 snap settings. One thing that convinced me to try the Katydid diaper, was the newborn hip snaps which prevent the side flaps from drooping. These snaps were exactly what I'd hoped, and helped me to fit the diaper on a newborn baby easier.

The Katydid diaper came with 2 inserts, one short, newborn insert which can be used as a doubler for an older baby, and a full-size adjustable (fold over and attach with snaps) insert. I really liked being able to use a short insert when the Miss A was using the smallest rise setting, rather than adding bulk with inserts that were too long.

Other features of the Katydid diaper, that are also found in the new Oh Katy diaper are:
  • outer layer of TPU, inner layer of soft microfleece
  • front-opening pocket design
  • snaps are designed so you can wrap and close the diaper up, so there's no need for a bag to store a soiled diaper when you're on the go!
Something I didn't like so much about the Katydid diaper is a feature they've improved in the new Oh Katy diaper.  It seemed like the leg elastics were too tight on Miss A's chubby thighs (this probably wouldn't have been a problem on a thinner baby). The new diaper has gentler leg gussets to make it more comfortable on chubby or sensitive thighs.

The Oh Katy diaper is available in 9 colours (5 more than before!) As well, as an extra eco-friendly gesture, it's now sold with less packaging.

BUY IT!

As an Earth Day special, when you purchase 4 Oh Katy diapers, you'll receive one FREE!!! Just add 5 diapers to your cart and the price will be automatically adjusted! Shop online with Baby Bellhop to take advantage of this great deal!

Beautiful Felizzy ~ Discount!

One thing that has never lost it's novelty...even after three children...is babywearing! I absolutely LOVE being able to have my baby or toddler close by while still being able to cook, clean, shop, or play games with my other children. Snaps & Snails carries some of the most beautiful carriers and they sent me a Felizzy Premium Ring Sling to wear my little ones in! Each Felizzy carrier is handmade in Peru by artisans in the Andes mountains! I love the "exotic" flair that the hand loomed wool gives to each sling. The ring slings are each made out of a single color of 100% organic cotton fabric...and the two small appliques of hand-woven wool on the sling give you a taste of the unique Felizzy style...and a splash of beautiful colors!

Besides loving the fabric and style of the Felizzy Premium Ring Sling, I also appreciate how breathable the sling is. The extra padding is also great for making the sling extra comfy! It also comes in a variety of colors...all just as beautiful as the one we received. We have really enjoyed using our new ring sling. It's very easy to use, and is a great for babies or toddlers alike!

Snaps & Snails also carries a great selection of cloth diapers and cloth diapering accessories as well as a variety of natural products for you and your family. They love to bring you products that are unique, top quality and eco-friendly!

Trek with your Baby!

Our baby loves to be carried. I guess most babies do! Most of the time, this is just fine - I love all the cuddly moments. But, what about when you're on the go for a while, and a stroller just isn't an option? Or it's winter and the mail goes through but the stroller just won't?! :) Or, you really have to vacuum today or the dust bunnies are going to start hopping around?! You get the idea...it's not always possible or practical to have your baby in your arms. And, not always good for your back, neck, arms etc either.

One solution is a baby carrier, and there are many, many different styles. Some styles may suit one baby/caregiver duo better than another, or may be better suited to some activities or baby stages better than another. I have a few different carriers, that I use for different occasions, depending on what I'm doing, if baby is going to be sleeping most of the time or wants to look around, how cold it is, etc.

Several times per week, I make the trek to and from school. We are fortunate that school is within walking distance, but even so, during the winter months, I was glad for my carrier so that baby was with me, and the boys were on the sled behind. Guess that's why I haven't taken out a gym membership yet!

My favourite carrier for walking longer distances, especially now that Annalies is holding up her head so well, is the babyTrekker. "Born" right here in Manitoba's north, the babyTrekker was created by mompreneur Judy for her 2nd child, over 20 years ago. In her family, the babyTrekker carriers are now being used by her children as they carry their children! Pretty cool...

The babyTrekker has 5 carrying positions:
  1. frontpack, baby facing in
  2. frontpack, baby facing out
  3. backpack, baby facing in
  4. backpack, baby facing out
  5. nursing
It's a very versatile carrier that adjusts to baby's age and preferences, as well as to the caregiver's preferences and activities. For example, vacuuming, you could use the carrier either on the front or back.  If you have to be cooking, company's coming and the food isn't ready and baby needs to be held, then the backpack position is ideal. When baby is just new, frontpack facing in is so cozy and cuddly. Later, when baby wants to look around, frontpack facing out is a great way to see the world! The straps are well-padded, making it comfortable on your shoulders, back, waist and hips. A really cool feature is the pocket on the front - useful for carrying something while you're wearing your baby, but also a great way to store the carrier itself when not in use - you basically turn the carrier inside out, and tuck the long straps in! :) Really, in all the years this family has been using and making the babyTrekker, they've thought of everything for making carrying your baby comfortable and safe for both you and your baby!

So far, I've mostly used the babyTrekker as a frontpack. Annalies is still young enough that I prefer to have her where I can see her. I've used it both facing in and out. On those cold winter days, walking to school, it was great to have her facing in, sheltered from the wind by me on the one side and the carrier cover on the other. (the carrier cover is a separate product, made by a different company, not sold with the carrier). I like how the straps are adjustable - I could easily make the carrier fit over my winter coat, and now over my spring coat, or just over my "in the house" clothes, by moving the snap hooks to a different D-ring on the shoulder straps. It's very easy to put on, even in the backpack positions. Annalies likes being close to us and is comfortable enough to fall asleep, which says enough. Now that the weather has warmed up, and Annalies is older, she's really enjoying facing outward, watching the other kids and parents and school and generally charming everyone! :)

My husband has also worn the babyTrekker. Because the waistband and the shoulder straps are easily adjustable, it's a simple matter to change who is using the carrier.

I have used the backpack position a couple of times, but not really enough to comment about it, so I'll save that for next time!

The babyTrekker carrier is available for purchase through their web store. It's for sale in 3 colours made with organic cotton (brown, neutral and grey) and regular cotton (blue). The organic version is available in regular and large size, fitting a variety of waists.

Earn your wings!! GIVEAWAY!

Many restaurants offer chicken wings as an appetizer - it seems to be a popular choice for many groups of people! There's a "new kid on the block" for wings - new as in "new and improved!" And, you'll have a new place to go to try wings, and, likely, a new favourite "wing hangout!"

At the beginning of April, just in time for the NHL playoffs, Boston Pizza International began serving bigger, better and tastier chicken wings across Canada. The plump, one-of-a-kind wings, available exclusively at Boston Pizza, come in both flatties (the wingette) and drummies (the bulbous meaty end) and are available oven roasted, breaded or fried with 14 original sauces and rubs. Yes, that's right, 14 flavour variations! There's got to be one for everyone:

  • Sesame Ginger
  • Pineapple Mango
  • Asian Five Spice
  • Caribbean Jerk
  • Chipotle BBQ
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Naked
  • Mild
  • Medium
  • Hot
  • Teriyaki
  • Honey Garlic
  • Thai Chili
  • BBQ

To celebrate, Boston Pizza is launching a new fully-integrated marketing campaign with TV, radio, online and in-store creative as well as an interactive Facebook campaign where guests can win a ‘wing night’ with friends.

Boston Pizza's new wings have been critiqued by Flatties and Drummies. Did you know there was a critics association specially devoted to wings? I didn't!! Anyway, they've received a very positive review...and I can totally understand why after our recent visit to Boston Pizza!

When our gift cards arrived in the mail, our 2-year old son helped me open the envelope. As soon as he saw the BP logo on the outside of the gift card holder, he became very excited - it's his favourite restaurant! :) "Can we go there right now Mama?!" We went for supper that very night. We tried a couple different flavours of wings - they're available in orders of 2 sizes, 1 pound and 2 pounds. We tried the Asian 5 spice, a dry wing, and the Pineapple Mango, a very saucy wing! Each came served with it's own dipping sauce, very appropriately matched. We really liked both flavours, and they were some of the meatiest wings I've ever eaten. TASTY!! Extra napkins are a must!

WIN IT!!

Boston Pizza wants to send one lucky Glimpse reader out for wings!! To enter the contest, you can “earn your wings” by sharing a short story of a situation where you went the extra mile to show your undying support for your favourite sports team. The PR team at Trillium PR and I will choose the most dedicated entrant, who will “earn their wings” and receive a $20 Boston Pizza gift card, so that they can try some of Boston Pizza's new, delicious chicken wings!!

Contest open to Canadian residents only and ends April 26, 2011. Please view our complete giveaway rules for more info.

Scholastic Monday ~ Shoe-La-La!

Most people would say that girls and shoes go hand in hand! :) Now I've never been one to love my shoes too much...just as long as I have some that fit and are comfy. BUT, that said...for someone who doesn't care much about shoes I sometimes feel that I still have quite the shoe collection hanging around! lol! Our featured book from Scholastic Canada this week is Shoe-La-La! by Karen Beaumont. Our 3 year old daughter definitely fits the bill for a girl who loves her shoes and this book has become a quick favorite! More often than not Shoe-La-La is her book of choice for a bedtime story.

Shoe-La-La! is a book that is full of fun...not too much seriousness to be found in here! It's a sweet story of four little girls heading out to shop for the perfect pair of party shoes...and fun pictures of the shoe store owner looking exhausted beside a mountain of shoes that the girls tried on. They try on every type of shoe you can imagine...yet find nothing! I love the unexpected end - where instead of buying shoes the girls decide to make their own party shoes. The ending encourages imagination, and creativity and I also like the hidden lesson that you don't always have to spend money in order to get a great product! Sometimes making your own shoes (or whatever you need) is the best way to get what you need.

Fresh From the Window Sill ~ GIVEAWAY!

One thing that I love, love, love about summer is the fresh garden foods...fresh veggies, fruits and even fresh spices! Yum! Let's face it. Food that comes directly from the earth tastes a LOT better than food that comes directly from the shelf. Speaking of the earth - did you know that this week we celebrate Earth Day?! It's a great time to become more aware of our Earth and how we are living...as well as to appreciate this beautiful world that God has given us. It'd also be a perfect time to make a choice to do our part in taking care of our planet! Lavish & Lime is a shop that is filled to the brim with eco-friendly products that are not only great for our earth, but that are also great for our homes and our families! In order to help celebrate Earth Day (and also because spring is finally here and gardening-time is just around the corner!) Lavish & Lime sent us an organic oregano Bamboo Grow Pot. I'm so excited about growing some fresh oregano for our meals. It is perfect for a sunny window sill, or can even be put outside or transplanted into your garden once it outgrows the bamboo pot. Personally, I love the stylish bamboo pot and would love to have some oregano growing on my window sill! The pot is leak-proof and when you receive it, you'll find everything you need (organic soil, seed and instructions) inside the pot. You can also buy organic basil, urban snapdragons and urban wish flowers in the Bamboo Grow Pots.

As I mentioned above, Lavish & Lime is packed full of products that are perfect for keeping our earth and our families healthy. Like this incredibly neat Stainless Steel Divided Bus Plate. I can only imagine how FUN this would make mealtime!! I know our son would be thrilled to eat food out of the 'tires' and 'windows' on this safe, non-leaching and dishwasher-safe stainless steel bus plate! Lavish & Lime has some other great earth friendly options for your food too, including the Glass Food Storage Containers, and the Stainless Steel Snack Containers.

Another really neat product that Lavish & Lime has added to their shop recently is the Scatter Flower Garden - Butterfly. This package of seeds will not only provide you with some gorgeous flowers, but it will also bring butterflies to your own backyard! The flowers in this pack of seeds will create a perfect habitat for butterflies. What a fun gift...or a great idea to try with your kids this summer!

Lavish & Lime is all about finding contemporary eco-friendly products to help each of us live life a little greener! Head over and take a look at what they offer.

Winner

The Winner of a Bambino Mio Swim Diaper and a pack of Natural Baby Wipes from Childish Notions is:

Congrats! You'll have 72 hours to reply to my email before a new winner is chosen.

Press Pause - and enjoy Life!

Exciting news! I have been asked to join other bloggers across Canada to form the new Press Pause Panel of Hallmark Canada. Hallmark is best known for their greeting cards, but they have many other products as well, and you'll find out about some new and exciting ones right here on Glimpse! Did you know that Hallmark Canada has been in operation for more than 100 years? This year, we'll show you how, along with Hallmark, you can celebrate special occasions, and special everyday moments, because, after all, life is a special occasion, too.

Hallmark Canada is a proud sponsor of Make-A-Wish Canada, an organization that helps to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. In 2010, they raised $75,000 and granted the wishes of 8 children. If there are 20,000 followers on Hallmark Canada's Facebook by World Wish Day on April 29, they will donate $10,000 to Make-A-Wish Canada. Please head right over and like Hallmark Canada and help them support this great cause.

Easter is coming up! The stores have been filled with eggs and bunnies for several weeks now, and we're all looking forward to a holiday weekend! Wouldn't it be nice if the snow was gone by then? (we had a new deposit last night and our spring world has been whitewashed again!)

In the spring Hallmark package, there were a couple of items specifically Easter-oriented. Our favourite is the Totally Ticklish Duck! TTD sings a cute little song, and if you tickle him/her (we're not sure!) under the wings, s/he begins to laugh - the more you tickle, the more hysterical the laughter. Laughter is contagious, and it's certainly true with Totally Ticklish Duck - s/he gets everyone laughing!! :) Regularly priced at $29.95, TTD is available for $14.95 if you purchase 3 greeting cards (offer valid until April 24, 2011).

The other item specific to Easter is a greeting card. But, not just any greeting card. This one sings for you! When you open the card, it sings the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song. Perfect for any Disney fans in your giving circle! PLUS: the card can "come to life" on your computer. (A webcam is required to view augmented reality.) It took me a little while to figure this out (had to read the help file!) You load a special something on your computer, and then show the card to the webcam and up pops a memory game! I also had to turn my webcam upside down, otherwise the game and I were upside down, which was slightly disconcerting to say the least! :) The memory game has several levels of difficulty, and makes a great extra for the recipient of your card.

Another item in the package would make a great Easter present, although not Easter-themed per se. It's Watson, a talking raccoon! Haven't you always wanted one?! :) Watson comes with a story book. As you read the story "to" Watson, there are several key phrases to which Watson responds. My boys LOVE Watson. He's based on voice-recognition software, of course, so you have to speak in a clear voice if you want it to work. It's so cute to see Daniel (2 1/2) sitting there holding Watson, telling him: "Watson, I weally need your help!" Unfortunately, Watson can't recognize words or letters that aren't spoken correctly, but Daniel tries his best! Jonathan (5) has been able to get Watson to respond a few times. There's a note on Watson's instructions saying that he works best with readers aged 8 and over, and I think this is probably quite accurate. What I like about Watson is that he's encouraging the kids to read. The whole family (grandparents included!) enjoyed the story when I read it aloud last night!

Love to Learn ~ GIVEAWAY!

Most of us here in Canada have probably heard of Owl Kids before! Even as a kid I loved reading their chickaDEE and OWL magazines at the local library. Owl Kids has a great selection of books too. The thing that I love about Owl Kids the most is that all of their books and publications are packed (and I mean loaded!) full of information, fun facts and food for your mind. :) It's obvious that they are great at what they do since they are celebrating 35 years of publishing these fabulous books and magazines for kids!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY OWL KIDS!

Owl Kids sent us a box of some of their newest spring 2011 books, and as usual they are exceptional. One of our favorites right now is The Human Body which is a "Lift the Flap and Learn" book. It is SO fun! There's a lot more than 'lifting flaps' that happens in this book that is filled with age-appropriate information on your body. There are so many great interactive ideas in this book...just pull a level to make a bicep grow or help your food travel through the digestive system. I couldn't think of a more fun way to teach your child about the body!

Another great title we received was "You Asked? Over 300 Great Questions and Astounding Answers". I think any parent can testify to the huge amount of questions that kids ask...and sometimes we want the questions to stop! But really...what better way is there for kids to discover and learn than to ask, ask, ask? Well, since the first issue of OWL Magazine hit the racks (1976!) kids have been writing to it's editors with all sorts of mind-boggling and baffling questions that they'd love to have answered. And the answers to those questions can be discovered in You Asked? It's a book that is filled with almost 350 of the best questions that have been submitted throughout the years. This book is not only fun for kids to read...but I found it completely intriguing as well - there are a lot of questions in there that even I did not know the answer to until now! You Asked? also has loads of photographs and illustrations and takes on all sorts of subjects including science, outer space, animals and more.

Owl Kids' online store
is filled with these books and many more! You'll love the great selection and I can honestly say that Owl Kids books are some of the most informative AND fun books that I've seen for kids (and even some that you parents/adults would enjoy!)

WIN IT!
Owl Kids is giving one of our readers a set of their THREE "Lift the Flap and Learn" books (Animal Babies, The Human Body and Earth and Sky! In order to get one entry, head over to Owl Kids and let us know which other book you'd love to add to your bookshelf.

Ö my - super cloth for baby!

Remember Omaïki, the company with the fabulous nursing pads? Today I want to tell you about Annalies' experiences with their cloth diapers and cloths.

Actually, Omaïki started out with cloth diapers and branched out from there. They make an All-in-one, a pocket diaper, a line of signature diapers (time limited designs), a fitted diaper, swim diapers, training pants and a newborn version; really, there's something for every stage and preference!
"The innovative Omaïki product line is designed, developed and produced in Canada.  The products offer a wide range of advantages which will meet the expectations of the most demanding young fathers and mothers:  Omaïki products are environmentally friendly in terms of the manufacturing process and in the way they are used; they are economical, sustainable and comfortable because they are made from a soft material that has both aesthetic and contemporary appeal."
Annalies has been using an All-in-one diaper (AIÖ). I love the colour - purple is my favourite! Aside from that, however, this is one of the first diapers I pick when the diapers are clean. It's easy to put on and get off - there's a little tag in the front centre that makes grabbing the diaper (and not the baby) super easy (I imagine this would be very handy on a baby boy!).  The diaper has one insert, attached at one end, and another insert you can snap in. In this way you can customize the absorbency you need. Also, because the one insert is completely removable and the other one is loose at one end, the diaper washes and dries like a dream. We've had great success using this diaper - no leaking. The AIÖ diaper fits Annalies well; she's a bit on the round side (over 17 pounds at 5 months) and there's still lots of room for adjustment in the waist using the velcro tabs - which can overlap if needed.. The diaper is adjustable in rise via snaps at the front, and they stay snapped up when I'm putting the diaper on (unlike some of the diapers we have whose snaps come loose as I'm trying to fasten the diaper). The legs are elastisized, but still comfortably fit around Annalies' chubby thighs. This diaper is trimmer than some other AIO's we've tried, and this means that she can wear some of her (my) favourite outfits a little easier and more often!

Ariane, the president of Omaïki, also sent along some of their Bamboo washcloths. These are regular sized washcloths - not the silly, never big enough, baby washcloths! Super soft and fluffy, they are great to use on baby, or anyone else really! The texture is great for cleaning sticky baby bums. And, they've stayed soft and fluffy, even though they've been through the wash many times. The cloths are made from 70% bamboo rayon and 30% organic cotton.

BUY IT!

Omaïki is offering Glimpse readers a 10% discount at their online store. Use the code: glimpse at checkout. Offer open to Canadians and expires June 30, 2011.

A Warm Buddy ~ GIVEAWAY ($80!)

Cuddling up to a stuffed animal and being warm and cozy are two things that always make our kids feel better when they are under the weather, or even just having a bad day. There's something about soft, cuddly stuffed animals that kids love...and what could be better when that stuffed animal can also provide a little extra warmth to your baby or toddler!? Warm Buddies are made to do exactly this. What a Jewel sent our family a warm buddy of our own and we are so happy to have welcomed "Baby Wooly the Sheep" into our family! He is a great addition, and has already been loved very much by our children! About a month ago our kids were sick...chills, sore throats, fevers...not fun! Each of them took turns sleeping with their new Warm Buddy which provided them with comfort and an easy & natural way to stay warm and provide some relief from the aches & pains. How does a Warm Buddy actually work? Each Baby Warm Buddy plush animal comes with a removable inner heat pack that is simply warmed in the microwave and then put back into the stuffed animal. It is then to be snuggled by your child. Each heat pack inside the plush animals is made with all natural ingredients (natural milled white rice) and is very safe for your child. In fact, Warm Buddy heat packs have been manufactured in Canada since 1996 and have gone through extensive testing with zero adverse reactions or problems to date. That's a pretty good track record! We love our Warm Buddy plush animal...we've found it to be a great comfort to our kids when they are under the weather, or even just experiencing a little bit of kid-sized stress. :)

Warm Buddy manufactures several other great items too - including some products for us parents! Check out the Warm Buddy Spa section for slippers, shoulder heat wraps and more!
