Mega Fun with Dora, Gardening!

At our house, we like blocks. It's amazing what you can build with a collection of blocks you can put together and the creativity and imagination we've witnessed is super! Our son Daniel will sit and build for quite a long time with various pieces, and create whole scenarios! And, he's quite interested in gaining new sets to add to his collection.

For kids who are really into Dora, Mega Bloks has brought out a whole line of Dora sets. Each set comes with a Dora figure, with changeable skirt :), and several accessories as well as a structure or vehicle and building blocks. I suppose the sets are really geared for girls, but my boys have never been bothered by stuff like that, and Daniel was very pleased to open up a new Mega Blocks set. Of course, he'd like a Diego to go along with it, but that's more because he just always wants more! :)

Dora's Garden Gazebo

This set comes with a gazebo, patio table, blooming sunflower, patio umbrella, planting pot and watering can, a blue bird and a pine tree! You can set up a "whole" garden! :) Of course it combines nicely with other sets, so if you have a house (or even better, Dora's house), you can put the garden and gazebo in the backyard. Most figures included with building sets are "as is," and it's really fun that you can "build" Dora too, by changing her skirt from a blue one to a pink one!

Daniel was quite excited when he got to open the packaging! All the little attributes make for a fun ensemble, so you can really pretend and make up whole stories. Both boys have been playing with the set, adding fences from the farm set, combining other pieces from other building blocks sets etc. It's really great to see their creativity develop, and I love how you can build something different each time, as you adjust your story. It's much more open-ended than many play sets available.

The set is rated 3+, probably because of the small pieces included, but also because of the fine motor skills needed to put the pieces together. This is a fun way to encourage those skills. Do be careful of the small attributes though, especially with younger children.

The Garden Gazebo was definitely a success in our house, and I would certainly recommend it. It retails for approximately $17 in Canada ($15 US), and is available at Kmart, Toys "R" Us (US, Canada and Online), Wal-Mart (Canada, US and Online), some Target locations and Amazon.com.
