Green Snacks ~ GIVEAWAY!

We love snacks in our home! If you were to visit, you'd hear our kids asking for snacks almost all day long some days. :) (For some reason, it's much more fun to eat snacks than it is to eat meals ;) ). Well, we recently received some great re-useable snack and sandwich bags from The Silver Bobbin. These are perfect for taking snacks or lunches to the park, a friends house, church, or for a long ride in the van. Tate and Emily are thrilled with their colorful new snack bags...and so am I! It's so nice to have some bags for lunches or snacks that will not rip or tear and that save both money and the environment. These bags are sewed with triple seams on each side and open and close with a wide band of velcro (which is very sticky and won't open up easily). Each bag is lined with nylon which is water resistant and super easy to clean. Our little snack and sandwich bags have been put to good use already and are showing no signs of wear yet! I can definitely see that they have been created to be durable and to last for many, many lunches and snacks.

You can even get creative with these re-useable bags. They'd make a great toiletry bag for travelling, or a nice little change purse. It'd even be a perfect spot to carry a few small toys or markers and a pad of paper for your kids. Whether you are young or old I'm sure that every home could find a use for some of these great re-useable bags from The Silver Bobbin!

WIN IT!

La Coursière Bio-Organic

Are you looking for organic shampoo, hand cream, etc. made in Canada? Of course, you want something that works well, is safe to use on all members of your family and at a reasonable price too. Well....read on to find out about a company we've discovered that seems to meet all of these criteria, at least in our opinion.

Ok, this is going to be a long review! Marco, owner of La Coursière Bio-Organic, sent our family quite a few items from his ever-growing collection of personal care products. There are products for infants, children, women and men, and we tried at least one item from every category. We are very pleased with each product - they have all worked well for us, and some have had unexpected bonus benefits (read on!).

Before we get to the actual products we tried though, you should know how this company operates.
"No Compromise!
We do not use: Sulfate (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), Cocamide (DEA, MEA), Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Synthetic (or artificial) perfumes or fragrances, PEG, EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Phenoxyethanol, Artificial Colours, Silicone, Petrolatum..."
I'm really happy to be able to avoid these ingredients commonly used in personal care products. You can read more about La Coursière Bio-Organic's mission and commitment on their website (click on "English" at the top left if you need to!)

All products are developed and produced in Quebec. They are packaged in recyclable containers. The prices are much more reasonable than many organic personal care products I've seen. Most of the website has been translated into English (only the Men's line is still waiting for more detailed descriptions and translations). All packaging is bilingual (French and English) and the ingredient lists use the INCI format (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients).

Infant Products - "Douce Mousse" Line

Daniel has been using the shampoo and body wash (2 separate products) since we received them in February. Yes, February! Our kids don't bathe every night, and we don't wash their hair every bath, but still, 1 bottle of shampoo, still not empty, from February, is exceptional I think! The shampoo foams up nicely, leaves his hair smelling clean (it's unscented) and is tear-free. Best of all, I think, is something we noticed by accident after a few weeks of using it. His cradle cap/scalp issues are completely resolved! Wow! No need for prescribed medicines or creams or oils, no trying to let oil sit on his hair for a while, then working at the loosened scales with a comb! This is so much easier, and so much safer and more gentle on the skin. In reading through the testimonials about the baby shampoo, I noticed that many other customers had mentioned the same result.

The body wash, also unscented, certainly does what it's supposed to do. It's noticeably less foamy than non-organic products, but if you use it on a bath/shower puff it still bubbles up well. And, more important than the bubbles, Daniel is clean! (and smells clean!) :) It's conveniently packaged in a pump - great for one-handed maneuvers!

The "Douce Mousse" line also includes a few other products which we haven't tried out yet:
diaper cream - has received rave reviews from customers using it;
baby lotion
a travel/trial pack with a collection of samples
organic cotton washcloths (at this point only available in the travel pack, but likely also separately upon request)

Children's Products - "Mission Nature" Line

Jonathan is really pleased with his "fruit punch" smelling shampoo. Once again, we have been using the same bottle since February. Both boys have short hair, so I imagine you would use more if you were washing a girl's hair, but still, a little seems to go a long way.  Jonathan also has had issues with cradle cap since birth, sometimes better, sometimes worse, but never completely cleared, UNTIL NOW!! As far as I'm concerned, that in itself is enough to recommend this shampoo!

There is also a body wash with the same scent. We haven't had opportunity to test this one, but seeing as the ingredients are similar to the baby body wash, I would expect it to work just as well.

Women's Products - "Botanika" Line

I received a bottle of shower gel and a container of lotion. The shower gel has a great, light scent which doesn't linger - I really don't want to smell like my shower gel all day! We are also careful with scented products in our home, as some members of our family have allergies and asthma and scent-sensitivities, and this has been a great product here! My shower gel didn't last as long as the boys', but it still lasted longer than I expected it to. Again, I found that if I used it on a cloth, it wasn't as foamy, but on a shower puff it worked great!

The lotion has been great too. It's easy to rub in, not greasy, and I've used it a lot on my face, without any break-out issues. It's good as a general body lotion too, but I liked it so well for my face that I've mostly used it there. It's also great for hands - leaves them soft but not slippery.

There is also a shampoo and a shampoo for coloured hair. A conditioner and a deodorant are coming soon.

Men's Products - "Formule Homme Actif" Line

Richard also tried out the men's shower gel and was very happy with it. He is anxiously waiting for a new bottle!  It's a great-smelling (naturally scented) product which cleans well and left him feeling refreshed. It didn't make his skin dry like many other body washes have.

There is also a shampoo for men available which we haven't tried.

Right now, shipping is free for orders over $100.

If you are a retailer interested in La Coursière Bio-Organic's products, please contact Marco La Coursière for more information.

Safe Online Play for Kids

Do your kids have trouble with sharing the computer? All the Glimpse kids are still pretty young, so playing on the computer is not something they do regularly. However, when they do, it's nice to have a safe place for them to be, with as many safeguards at our fingertips as possible, including a time limit!

If you are trying to monitor your children's time online, then Zoodles may just be the tool for you! Zoodles allows you, as the parent, to set a time limit, decide which content is available to your kids, put up as many safeguards as you want, and then get an update in your email letting you know what your child actually did during their time online.

Zoodles takes all the popular children's websites and brings them together in one safe place. There is no way that your child can accidentally click away from Zoodles and find themselves on a page they shouldn't be. Once you log on, your browser will no longer be visible, and they have to follow specific instructions to log off.

We were each given a trial Premium membership to Zoodles, so here are our opinions.

Stacey's take on Zoodles:
We have had the chance to try Zoodles out for the last few weeks, and Rowan has really enjoyed it. I have set the safety standards almost as high as they can go, and limited his time as well. I feel this helps him to understand that sitting at the computer all day is not beneficial, but it is a fun treat that he can enjoy for a while

I like the fact that I get an email telling me exactly what Rowan did during his time on Zoodles. Even though I know he can't click on anything that I wouldn't approve of, it's still nice to see where he spends his time.

Bria, on the other hand, is still too young to really know what she's doing on the computer. I did sign her up for it, but Rowan ended up using her time. I would say that this website is a lot of fun from around age 4 or 5 and up.

Overall, I think Zoodles is a great tool to make the internet safe and fun for kids. I like that you can access the page for free, and it's optional to upgrade to use the Premium features.

Julie's take on Zoodles:
Jonathan (almost 5) has enjoyed playing on Zoodles. He liked that he could have a picture of himself on the profile, and then he could go to places independently. It's been a great "quiet time" activity while Daniel is napping. At first he had a bit of trouble trying to get back to activities he'd enjoyed another day, but we soon figured that out as well.

Like Stacey, I like that Zoodles sends you an email detailing which category of activities the Jonathan visited. I also like that you can set the controls to encourage one category more than another (like if you wanted to have your child have more math than reading, for example), and also to allow (or not) certain kinds, like videos.

Many of the websites Jonathan visited through Zoodles are ones he had visited before (ie PBS kids, Starfall, etc), so once he got there he knew what to do. It is nice to know that he can't "accidentally" get anywhere else without quitting Zoodles.

I did sign Daniel up as well (age 2), but it was too advanced for him. He did enjoy watching me do some of the activities, but on the whole, I think he's too young. Zoodles does customize the available content to age, so what we were doing together was at least age-appropriate.

Andrea's Take on Zoodles
Zoodles was a big hit in our home for our oldest child as well (4 years old). He absolutely loves the games and would spend far too much time playing them if he was allowed to. :) The options that are available through Zoodles are great - such as the time limits and I really appreciated the fact that you can customize it so there are NO ADS or places where a child can click that will take them to a site where you don't want them to go. We really liked all the "customizing" that you can do on Zoodles as well. I will echo Julie and Stacey in that it was great to receive an email about what Tate did on Zoodles.

All in all, we really have enjoyed using Zoodles and will continue to make use of it in the future!

WIN IT!

Little Alphabots

I know: there are TONS of alphabet books out there! I've just discovered a new one, that both my kids are interested it! Jonathan is nearly 5, knows all his alphabet and is interested in finding words that begin with the particular letter or writing words and sounds.  Daniel is just barely 2, loves looking at pictures in books and recognizing familiar objects. It's pretty rare to find a book for both of them!

Front Cover
The Little Alphabot book has entertained them both. Each page has a picture of a robot whose name begins with that letter of the alphabet. At the end of the book is a 2-page spread of all the alphabots, followed by a 2-page spread of the letters: uppercase and lowercase. Daniel is able to recognize the letter "D" in other contexts, after we've looked at this book several times and pointed out his D. He certainly impressed Oma when out of the blue he pointed to "D for Daniel!" Jonathan thinks the pictures look "cool!" (direct quote!) :) My husband and I like the book because it's entertaining for the children.

The pictures are very colourful, and the robots have lots of interesting features that appeal to children! The book is a paperback binding, and an easy size for kids to hold and handle; it would also fit easily into a diaper bag to take along for entertainment "on the go!"

sample 2-page spread
Darren Thompson, the illustrator of Little Alphabots, is a graphic design artist living in Ontario. The Little Alphabot book is available by contacting him directly, or at a few shops in Ontario. It's very reasonably priced at $9.95 (CAD). The Alphabots designs are also available as a colouring book, prints (individual alphabots), a poster (all the alphabots), a t-shirt, or 4X6 cards per letter to spell out your child's name. To view these options, please visit the Little Alphabots page on Darren's website. To purchase the book, please contact Darren via email.

Chic & Eco ~ GIVEAWAY!

Reusable bags is one thing that I've grown to love in the last year! Before I'd be using shopping bags left right and center - but now? I'd much rather prefer to use a resuable shopping bag. And there's more reasons for this than just 'saving the environment' (though that is one of them :) ). One of my favorite aspects of reusable shopping bags is that they are STRONG! No rips, no tears...nothing falls out the bottom of them if you fill them up with heavy goodies - they are strong and durable and I love it! Recently I came across a fantastic Canadian shop called ECOcentric Bags. They have a HUGE selection of bags that are chic AND eco! ECOcentric Bags sent us several of their great bags. The ChicoBag Sling rePETe™ was one of the first ones we pulled out. This bag is unique in that it is made from recycled materials...and the ChicoBag makes this no secret! It has a fun "recycle" symbol printed on each bag as well as a list of each recycled component that was used when creating the bag. This bag is large enough for shopping, going to the beach or pool, or just for packing in all those extra things that you've gotta to take along when you've got young kids! When you're not using the ChicoBag Sling it stuffs into an integrated pouch and has a handy little Carabiner so you can clip it on your belt loop...or anywhere you'd like. I also tried out the Flip & Tumble 24-7 Reusable Shopping Bag. This one is similar to the ChicoBag in that it also stuffs into a tiny pouch when it is not being used...but it has a few unique features that make it special as well. Such as the fun prints! The Flip & Tumble is also VERY durable and is made from ripstop nylon. It can carry up to 35lbs in weight! You can carry a couple bowling balls or even a watermelon in this bag! :)

Secondly we received two of the eye-catching bags from the Envirosax Kids Series. Tate and Emily LOVE to tote things around in their Envirosax! These bags are full of fun and color - and will not get lost easily. Having reusable bags for your kids is a wonderful way to teach them about how important it is to re-use and protect our environment and our future. These bags also roll up and are snapped together when they are not used - making them very easy to store.

Finally, we tried out a Baggu Reusable Produce Bag. This is something that I've been 'eyeing' for a while, but have never tried until now. The Baggu Produce Bag is PERFECT for shopping! I like it soooo much more than those skinny, rip-able plastic produce bags you get at the store. This bag is very lightweight, is long lasting, and breathable. It's easy to use, wash and store, and is an amazing alternative to the plastic produce bags!

As you can see, ECOcentric Bags is packed full of re-usable goodies! :) With reasonable prices, and unique, stylish and fun designs, I'd definitely say that ECOcentric Bags is a perfect place to stock up on some quality reusable bags.

WIN IT!
ECOcentric Bags is giving away a $40 Gift Certificate to one lucky reader! In order to get one entry, head over to ECOcentric Bags and let us know which of their fabulous bags you'd spend the GC on if you won!

The Wood Garden ~ GIVEAWAY!

Teething...it's something that we're going to be getting back into around here very soon! With Jenna being almost 5 months old she's getting to the stage where chewing on toys and putting things in her mouth is one of her favorite things to do! As I was looking through our baby toys a few weeks back I noticed something - every single one of them was made of plastic...and we're hearing more and more negative things about the effects of plastic in our homes. So I went on a search for some wooden teething toys and discovered a fantastic little etsy shop called The Wood Garden. They make the cutest toys out of wood...and there's toys for both babies and older children! The Wood Garden sent Jenna a few wooden teething rings - and she is enjoying them a LOT! Their teething rings are made from maple and perfect for a baby to hold onto and chew on. They are a great alternative to all the plastic teething toys I have packed up in a box right now - and they're much more durable, and easier to keep clean as well! Each maple teether is sanded until it's completely smooth, and then finished with certified organic flax seed oil. One other thing that I noticed about our wooden teething rings is that they are VERY lightweight! Even lighter than a lot of the plastic baby toys we own. The rings also are versatile in that you have the option of attaching a piece of terrycloth to them for your babe to chew on. I'm sure we'll be making use of this idea yet as well.

The Wood Garden
creates a unique and fun line of wooden toys...and each one of them is handcrafted with love and care! (and you can tell...the quality of their work is superb) Each toy is made with wood from sustainably farmed hardwood trees. They use only woods that meet Canadian Standards Association's "Sustainable Forest Management Standard". We love the simplicity of the toys from The Wood Garden...the natural colors of the wood and the great designs speak for themselves - anyone with young children (or grandchildren!) will love their items...guaranteed! :)

WIN IT
The Wood Garden is giving one of our readers a wooden teething ring of their choice. In order to get one entry into the contest, head over to The Wood Garden and let us know which of their great wooden items caught your eye.

Back to School with less trash!

Kids are back to school now, routines are being found, lunches are being made. Sandwiches are being packed in plastic bags, snacks in plastic bags, other items also in disposable bags or containers. But unless you're like some people I know, all those sandwich and zipper-lock bags are just going into the garbage after 1 use, contributing to the increasing garbage problem.

Jonathan started school this year, full-day but alternating days kindergarten. Just before school started we received a reusable sandwich wrap and snack bag from SewEco, a company who makes "handmade Eco-goodies," or littlerless and reusable food transporters!

The sandwich wraps and snack bags are made with a fabric outside, available in many different patterns, and a food-safe nylon inside. The snack bag closes with velcro, with little tabs in the middle of the top, making it easy for even the smallest of independent snackers to get inside (Daniel, age 2, can do this easily!)

The sandwich wrap folds around your sandwich in a manner reminiscent of a burrito, and opens up to create quite a nice-sized, clean eating space - a travelling placemat if you will! No more worries about how clean that school desk or table is!

The sandwich wrap and snack bag are perfect for school lunches, but also for adults going to work - my husband was keen to try it out too! There are fabric options which are more kid-friendly, while others will be more attractive for adults. And, just think, every time you use a reusable food transporter, you don't need to buy, use and throw out a plastic bag! :)

SewEco also sells kitchen wetbags - perfect for storing wet dishcloths, paperless towels etc in between washes - and - you guessed it - paperless towels or napkins. Again, great accessories without the disposable issue!

BUY IT!

SewEco would like to offer Glimpse readers free shipping on any order over $25.00. Just mention that you saw them on Glimpse Reviews in the message field when ordering. Offer expires April 2011.

Story Time For Me ~ Giveaway for all!!

Kids have been back in school for a little while now, and hopefully getting back into the routine of learning. Whether you send them to public or private school, or teach them at home, every child needs to learn to read. Why not make that a fun experience!

Story Time For Me is a great website that offers personalized online Children's Books. They are high quality, and more than your average personalized story. These Children's Storybooks are not just fun though, as they are set up to be a great program for early readers. They have word highlighting, so your child can follow along. They also have the option to turn the pages manually and take their time. Your child can also click on any word to hear it's correct pronunciation, and practice their word recognition. The professional voice narration is very clear and well articulated, so your child will be able to understand.

If all of this wasn't enough to make these Children's Stories great, they also push the educational aspect a bit further, and include thought provoking discussion questions at the end of the story.

A great wet bag!

After swimming lessons, or any other wet activity, what do you do with the wet stuff? If you're like us, until recently, you just wrap stuff up in the towels, and hope nothing else would get wet.

Now we have a wet bag from The Sling Sisters! This wet bag is much better than any others I've tried. The waterproof lining is a DEHP, Phthalate and BPA-free medical-grade waterproof fabric (much thicker than PUL), and it really does NOT LEAK! I tested it out a few times, leaving our wet spray park gear in the bag for a longer time, and the outside of the bag was not wet at all. I think it helps that there are 2 layers of fabric, sewn separately except at the zippered top.

The bag is approximately 12x15 inches, has a zippered top and a strap with a snap. The strap is a great feature that I've not seen in other wet bags. The size is just right for swimming stuff with 2 kids, but we've also used the wet bag for wet cloths and wet diapers and it works well here too. The wet bags are available in 10 fabric designs. You can have a cool fabric on the outside and still a great waterproof bag!

Any item I've seen, purchased or received from The Sling Sisters has been well-made and durable, and the wet bag is no exception. The sisters, Sandra and Lori, take pride in their work, and are very approachable for advice and product suggestions. Contact them via the website and follow them on Facebook - there are often deals or contests for Facebook fans!

BUY IT!

The Sling Sisters are offering Glimpse readers a 25% discount on all wet bag purchases! While you're visiting their website, check out their other products as well - they've got some great stuff!! Offer valid until October 15, 2010, to Canadians only. Use the code "glimpse25" in the comments section when ordering to make the most of this great deal!

Bowtique Style For Your Little Princess ~ Giveaway!

Having little girls is so much fun, and one thing that I really enjoy is fun hair accessories! I have purchased many hair clips over the last 3 years, but none have been quite as awesome as the ones sent to me by Mi Nena Bowtique.

I wasn't really sure they would be any different than other clips I've tried, but one style has totally won me over! The Baby Bow is different than other clips I have seen, and it worked perfectly in Emery's hair! That is, before we cut it (gulp). And I'm sad to say that I don't have any pictures, because my husband surprised me by cutting her hair. Emery was born with a bit of longish hair on top of her hair, which just kept growing and growing. It looked ridiculous, really, but the Baby Bow was the perfect way to show off her sparse hair! I just gathered the tiny strands together and clipped the bow on. It was described to me like Pebbles Flinstone!

The other bows we received were the Snap Bow, Snap Bling, Plain Jane, and a 3 in 1 Headband. Bria is absolutely in LOVE with the Headband and the Plain Jane. She would love to wear all of it at once, if I would let her! The clip that comes with the 3 in 1 stays in super well, as does the Plain Jane. I just love the variety of styles to choose from as well.

Mi Nena Bowtique really has something for every little girl. From not so much hair to a head full, these clips stay in really well.

WIN IT!
Mi Nena Bowtique would like to offer one lucky Glimpse reader a $25 Gift Certificate! So head on over and pick out your favorites! Then come back here and leave us a comment to enter.

A Story of Hope ~ GIVEAWAY (3 WINNERS!)

30 years ago an incredible journey was begun by an incredible Canadian man! Terry Fox is a name we all know well, and I'm sure his story of hope is no stranger to most Canadian households. Scholastic Canada sent us a copy of the newest edition of Terry's story. Terry Fox, A Story of Hope beautifully showcases the Marathon of Hope that Terry Fox ran. This newest edition includes extra photographs and updates on Terry’s legacy, as well as quotes from Terry Fox and a rewriting of his story that makes you realize just how much he cared and how much he gave for the cause of finding a cure for cancer! Here is a quick summary, in case a few of our readers may not be as familiar with the legacy of Terry Fox:

At the age of 18, his right leg was amputated and he worked tirelessly to recover. Right from the start, Terry was determined to find a way to beat this thing called cancer....and he had a dream. This dream was to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He began the run, and ran 3339 miles in 143 days when he discovered that his cancer had returned. He never made it back to the run-way...but left behind a legacy that will be remembered forever.

The author of Terry Fox, A Story of Hope is donating all royalties from it to the Terry Fox Foundation, and Scholastic Canada is matching that donation. So if you're looking for an inspiring, Canadian book to add to your shelves, this is the one! As well, why not take part in the Terry Fox run in your community? September 19, 2010 is the official date of the run, though many schools and communities have their own dates set to better suit their schedules...so check it out, and join in on the Marathon of Hope.

“Anything’s possible if you try. Dreams are made if people try.” -Terry Fox

WIN IT!
Scholastic Canada is giving away THREE copies of this great book! In order to enter leave a comment with a Terry Fox memory that you have.

We *heart* Northern Mom! ~ GIVEAWAY!

Getting out of the bathtub is never something that is looked forward to around here! There's just too much fun to be had in the tub! :) But when Emily recently received an adorable new bath towel from Northern Mom she was more than happy to jump out and right into her new, cozy towel. The towel is made with bamboo fleece and is soooo soft! The inside is the softest - which is perfect for snuggling up your little wet toddler or baby into and keeping them as warm as possible while drying them off. It's a nice-sized towel too - so good for more than just babies! Emily, at 2 years old, can be easily wrapped up into this hooded towel. Of course, the designs on the towel make it even sweeter - a pink/striped heart and matching piping - perfect for any little girl! I would definitely recommend a cute and comfy towel like this for baby shower gifts, or perhaps even a more practical Christmas gift for your kids/grandkids, etc.!

Northern Mom also hand-makes a bunch of other items! She's got some wonderful baby wraps (and we all know that baby carriers are near and dear to my heart!! :) )...and you'll also find cloth diapers (which we also love in our home), wet bags and more. Handmade items are always favorites in our home, and they make fabulous gifts as well!

WIN IT!
Northern Mom is giving one of our readers a set of 4 bamboo flannel wipes made from 100% rayon of Bamboo flannel. These would be perfect for cleaning cloth diapered bottoms or as wash cloths for bath time. In order to get one entry, head over to Northern Mom and let us know what you loved the most in her shop.

Party Party! GIVEAWAY ~ 2 winners!!

We hosted a birthday party last weekend - Daniel turned 2! :) It's hard to believe that our littlest man is already so grown up. We decided on a farm theme for his party as he loves tractors and animals. We did a barn cake and little cupcake animals around - it turned out really well. Daniel understands a little more about birthdays than last year - at least, he knows what to do with presents, candles and cake. But his favourite part is still the balloons. And, where to get farm-themed balloons? Hmmm...

Single Source Party Supply is the place to go - for balloons of any theme! In fact, there are more categories of balloons than I thought possible! So, it shouldn't matter what kind of party you're throwing, you should always be able to find the balloons you're looking for.

But, they have more than balloons galore...they also sell ribbon, balloon weights, card-making equipment and more! Check out their website! If you're throwing a Hallowe'en bash this year, you should know that all the Hallowe'en items are 10% off through October 15th.

For Daniel's party we were sent a set of 10 11" latex balloons - 5 different colours and farm animal designs, an 18" round farm scene balloon and a large 22" barn with farm animals balloon. Michelle from Single Source Party Supply was super helpful during the ordering process and sent inflation tips and advice, and shipping was fast. We got the larger balloons inflated in time for the actual birthday on the 5th, and assumed we'd have to get them re-inflated for the party on the 11th. But by the end of the week, the balloons were still doing fine, except for an inflation/tying error by the person manning the helium tank, but that's nothing to do with the balloons. During the week, the boys played with the balloons, quite actively :), and they still looked as good as new by party time. So we didn't get them re-inflated. I took the pictures posted here today (15th), so they've been inflated 11 days, and still going strong. We are super impressed! :) The kids are always so disappointed when other helium balloons they've received have drooped in less than a day, so these are a great surprise and delight!! We decided not to get the latex balloons inflated with helium (ran out of time really, what with company and a leaky roof a couple of days before the party), and the kids have had fun playing with them as well. In fact, there were quite rambunctious balloon throwing games going on at the party (it's always those bigger kids!) but only 2 popped - these are much thicker and stronger than your average balloon.

WIN IT!!

organicKidz - Bottles for babies and toddlers!

With all the recent scary information about plastic food containers, it's no wonder there are other alternatives to baby bottles. Up until just recently, though, I'd only seen "safe" plastic or glass bottles, and I wasn't sure I liked either of them. I know for sure how the glass bottle situation would go at our house, with hard tile floors in the kitchen! So, I didn't even want to go that route.

Then I found out about organicKidz! This Canadian family-owned company was founded in 2008, with a desire "to provide children and parents with a toxin free, unbreakable alternative to plastic and glass bottles." Eureka! Just what I've been looking for! Daniel is 2 now, so long past the bottle stage, but #3 is on the way (yes, it's true!) and it's always handy to have a bottle or 2 on hand in case it's needed.  organicKidz has earned several awards for their products, including the ptpamedia green product award for the thermal bottle, and the Disney iParenting Media and a Mom's Best award for other bottles.

organicKidz bottles are made from stainless steel, which has the following features:
  • "Stainless steel is corrosion resistant and will not break down.
  • It will not shatter, and expose your child to potentially dangerous shards.
  • Stainless steel will not leach harmful chemicals when heated.
  • Unlike aluminum, it does not need a liner to protect your children from potentially harmful elements.
  • Stainless steel is easy to clean and does not require strong chemical cleaners.
  • Stainless steel will not scratch, thereby preventing potentially harmful bacteria to hide in your child’s bottle."
organicKidz sent us a 4 oz wide-mouthed bottle to try. We went for the wide-mouthed bottle because it's compatible with the sippy cup spouts Daniel was already used to, and then we could try it out right away. I'm not sure he's going to want to give his bottle to the baby! :)  There are also narrow-necked bottles in 3 sizes (4, 7 and 9 oz) and a bigger wide-mouthed bottle (9 oz). The 9 oz narrow-necked bottle has the advantage of being double-walled, making it able to keep liquids warm or cold for over 6 hours! This would be a great feature for babies who have to have something warm to drink (like my kids)!

The bottles are available in various colours and designs. The narrow-necked bottles are compatible with certain brands of bottle nipples and accessories while the wide-mouthed bottles are compatible with other brands. Depending on what you might already have in house, this is a very handy feature, as you can still keep using what your baby/child is used to. Another useful feature is that the lid can be used as a measuring cup for formula. The side of the bottle is marked with a scale so you can "read" from the inside or the outside how much is in the bottle.

BUY IT!

organicKidz is offering Glimpse readers a 10% discount on purchases from their online shop. Use the code 'organic10' at checkout.

Turbo Dogs ~ GIVEAWAY (5 WINNERS!)

There's just something about race cars and boys that go together. :) As moms who have a 4 and 5 year old boy, we were more than happy to check out a new series called Turbo Dogs! Here's a quick summary of the show...

Dash, Mags, GT, Strut, Stinkbert and Clutch are the town's Turbo Dogs and although they may be fierce competitors on the track and let's face it, celebrities in the town of Racerville, they always (well almost always) try to remember that winning isn't everything. While kids are sure to get caught up in the action-packed storylines and non-stop antics, an emphasis on team work will also see that they zoom away with some rules for the road.

Andrea's Take on Turbo Dogs... My 4 year old son LOVES anything to do with race cars right now, so Turbo Dogs was an immediate hit in our home. He loved all of the episodes on the 1st season DVD of Turbo Dogs. The stories are animated, action-filled and most have a good lesson tucked into them as well. We are VERY picky about what we let our children watch, and we would say that Turbo Dogs is a fairly good show for kids! There were a few "actions" or "negative-type remarks" that in my opinion didn't need to be included to get the point of the story across, but all in all, it is a good, clean and entertaining series for kids!

Stacey's take on Turbo Dogs... Rowan is absolutely in love with this DVD! He asks for it constantly, and I really have no problem with him watching this show. He's fallen in love with the characters, and I think he's catching on to a few of the character lessons that these shows portray as well. Of course, he's picked out his favorite character, a dog named Strut, who wins a lot of races.

I do have to agree with Andrea, that there are a few small negative things in the show that could have been left out. But for a show that is on CBC, and now available on DVD, its really quite good. I believe that the lessons taught shine through the few moments of negativity. There are many other shows that I would not let Rowan watch, so this is a great option for us!

A lot of our readers are probably familiar with Veggie Tales or 3-2-1 Penguins...and Turbo Dogs is created by the same producers! Even though Turbo Dogs is a relatively new show, it has already been awarded the 2009 Parents Choice Award as well as the Dove Family Seal of Approval! Watch Turbo Dogs in your own home Monday to Friday on CBC between 7:15am 11:45am.

WIN IT!
In celebration of the release of the 1st Season of Turbo Dogs on DVD, five of our readers are going to receive their own copy of the season 1 Turbo Dogs DVD! In order to get one entry into the contest let us know what your child's favorite TV show is.
