Petal Babies General Store

We've all seen those gorgeous crochet baby beanies right? The ones with the huge flowers attached to them. I've always admired them, and thought it would be fun to have one for my girls. The only problem is that sometimes, you just don't want that huge flower. How about a smaller flower, or maybe a fish or just a different color of flower? Should I buy a whole bunch of beanies?

This is where the beanies from Petal Babies General Store are unique. The flowers are completely detachable, and interchangeable! I was sent a pink beanie, with a whole handful of different flowers to attach to it. I've had fun changing them and Bria also thinks it's awesome. The beanie is Emery's, but Bria loves to dress her up!

The beanie is excellent quality, and the flowers attach securely with a snap, so there is no issues with babies being able to pull them off. I think this is an awesome idea, and look forward to seeing Emery wear her beanie in all of it's beautiful styles.

Petal Babies General Store is located in London, Ontario, and you can find them at the Western Fair Farmer's Market every week!

Scribbling & Writing CAN be Fun! ;)

All across the country kids are going back to school! And although my kids are not quite school-age yet, we still LOVE to help them learn at home. Right now we're mainly working on numbers and the alphabet with our 4 year old. For the most part...he likes school, but sometimes learning to write his letters is just plain boring! That is...until he received the Scribble & Write product from LeapFrog. We've heard of LeapFrog before and I always thought their products sounded absolutely fantastic...though we'd never tried any. LeapFrog creates products that are fun, engaging, creative and that are loaded with tools to help your children learn. Tate was thrilled with his Scribble & Write...I've never seen him so interested in writing his letters before. ;) The Scribble & Write helps your child to learn their letters by asking them to trace the lights on a screen. They can trace capitol letters, lowercase letters and can have fun drawing shapes and pictures too! There are some real neat little games included on the Scribble & Write...such as guessing what letter they are drawing, and following the moving light on the screen to draw a surprise picture (this is one of Tate's favorites!) With the Scribble & Write Tate can practice and learn his alphabet, phonics, early writing skills and pencil control - and the best thing is that it makes learning so much fun!

LeapFrog has a great selection of products for very young children, right up to 9 years old! I love their "LeapFrog Promise"...check it out:

The LeapFrog Promise:

Is to create fresh, engaging, effective learning experiences that inspire and delight kids - over and over again. At LeapFrog our teams understand how to emotionally and intellectually captivate the minds and imaginations of children. At LeapFrog, everyone puts learning first - every teacher and technician, every engineer and artist. At LeapFrog, our teams know how to put those crucial, creative elements together to make learning feel like magic.

The LeapFrog way is a simple equation:
~ Rigorous, proven learning methodologies
~ Compelling, multi-layered content

~ Intuitive, invisible technology
________________________________________

= Learn Something New Every Day

We can see the LeapFrog promise in action in our home every time Tate takes out his Scribble & Write! As a mom I definitely would, without question, say that LeapFrog has become one of our favorite brands...it is perfect for parents who want their kids to be learning, and perfect for kids who want to be enjoy life to the fullest! :)

BUY IT!
LeapFrog products would make fabulous gifts for birthday, Christmas - or anytime really! I can promise you...LeapFrog will NOT disappoint! (P.S. Shhh...don't tell anyone, but you can be sure that there'll be some items from LeapFrog waiting for our kids under the Christmas tree this year!)

Too Cute to be Boys! ~ GIVEAWAY!

There's a lot of things that us girls get and boys don't get! You know, like pretty dresses, nail polish, hair accessories, ribbons and bows, etc. But the boys have sure had it good when it comes to underwear! Boxers are definitely far more comfortable than any girls underwear I've ever found. That's what designer Rebecca Winterhalt thought too, because she decided to create some comfortable underwear for girls...finally! :) Baby Grins, a fabulous Canadian shop, sent Emily a set of these adorable boxer style underwear to try. She loves them! And I love them too! The Girl Gotch slogan has it right - they simply are just "too cute to be boys!" We love to use Girl Gotch underneath dresses because of their modest fit. Even though they're perfect to wear underneath skirts or dresses we wear them on regular days too. When we pick a new pair to wear, Emily almost always picks her Girl Gotch underwear...so that definitely tells me that there's something special about them! :)

Girl Gotch creates these fabulous undergarments for ages 2 through 6, and they come in 2 different styles: the boxer style (as shown here) and a Girl Gotch Brief. These were designed after boys underwear, but with a bunch of extra cuteness and flair to make them perfect for little girls!

Baby Grins has a great selection of other items for the whole family as well. They've got some great items for any outdoor adventures you might have yet this summer or fall, and be sure to take a peek at all the other fabulous things they have to offer too!

WIN IT!
Baby Grins is giving one of our readers a $25 gift certificate! You could purchase your own set of Girl Gotch if you'd like (we'd highly recommend them! :) ). In order to get one entry, head over to Baby Grins and let us know what you'd like to get with the gift certificate if you won.

A cuddly doll - GIVEAWAY!

Maplerose is a brick-and-mortar and online shop based in Nelson, BC. It was established with the goal of being a Canadian source for Waldorf supplies and toys. I'm not very familiar with the Waldorf education system, as there are no Waldorf schools here in Manitoba, but what I do know is that there's a strong emphasis on developing a child's imagination in this system. Waldorf toys that I've seen often are very basic but multi-purpose, leaving a lot of the details to the child. Maplerose sources many products locally and also makes some themselves. Waldorf toys are designed to suit a child's age and real developmental needs, while being aware of how they affect the growing child.

Daniel received a Waldorf cuddle doll, and this doll is no exception to the Waldorf principles. This doll is suitable for babies on up. Made of cotton velour and stuffed with wool, it's beautifully soft and cuddly. Since Daniel has started sleeping in a toddler bed, he insists on "baby" being their with him. Wool dolls are known to absorb scents, and are often used as bonding or comforting dolls, and I wonder if this appeals to Daniel as well. As you can see, the face has little detail, allowing children to imagine facial expressions etc and to fit the doll into different situations.  The Waldorf cuddle dolls are made by a group of mothers and grandmothers in Argentina to benefit a local Waldorf school. I like the idea of supporting a Canadian business, and also supporting a group trying to help the children in their community.

Daniel's doll has been loved rather aggressively for a few months now, and it has held up well. The hat knot has been sucked or chewed on, and looks a little grungy, but he doesn't mind. It survived a bath the other day with no adverse effects - Daniel decided to wash baby in the sink while I was on the phone! :) I just hung it up on the line to dry, as the wool stuffing can't be dried in the machine, and baby was good to go again by sleep time.

Maplerose carries a good selection of other Waldorf-based toys for a variety of age ranges and other items including arts and crafting supplies and books. The toys and other supplies are great for any child and would make a great, lasting gift, even if they're not enrolled in a Waldorf school.

WIN IT!

Keeping toys close with Simply on Board ~ Giveaway!

We're in that really fun stage. You know the one where babies learn to drop their toys? Yup, that one. Some places it's not a big deal. Like at home when Emery is in her high chair. If she drops a toy, it's not the end of the world. But when we're out for a walk, or just out and about, if she drops a toy, I might not notice, and that would be the end of that. Not to mention how gross toys get with they are chewed on and then dropped in the dirt. Yuck!

I was very happy to review these great toy straps from Simply on Board! Invented by a Canadian mom, they are a great, yet simple tool for keeping toys from being lost or getting dirty on the ground. And what's even more exciting, is that they are now being sold through Babies R Us in Canada! What a great success story for a Canadian mom.

These toy straps come in a pack of two, and are super stylish. We were sent the black set, which comes with one plain black toy strap and one with white polka dots.

The concept is simple, really, but I do love how the one side of the strap has a generous loop, and it's all totally adjustable, so you can strap any sized toy onto it, and strap the other end to whatever car seat, stroller, bike seat, etc that you are using.

So far I've found the Simply on Board toy straps to be incredibly useful, and I hope you will too!

WIN IT!
Simply on Board would love to send one lucky reader a set of 2 toy straps! In order to enter, please let us know the gender of the baby who would benefit from this giveaway!

Back to School with Thermos! ~ GIVEAWAY!

Can you believe that summer is almost over? It's just flown by it seems! And now in just a week or two a lot of kids will be heading back to school again. Back to studying, homework, packing lunches and of course - recess! ;) One of the most important things that they bring to school though is their lunch. We know that kids need healthy, and nourishing lunches to keep their minds and bodies alert and active. Thermos is a fantastic Canadian company that has some of the cutest, coolest and highest quality lunch items around. We are big fans of Thermos around here (so much so that their items are among some of the few items that we've wanted enough to order off the internet and pay a little extra for in shipping fees!) Let me share with you what we love about Thermos the most. :) We received two lunch kits, two FUNtainer bottles and two FUNtainer food jars. Even though our kids aren't quite school age yet, they still love packing up lunches in their Thermos lunch sets. The Lunch Kits are just the right size for kids, and they keep your food fresh for hours. Thermos lunch kits have IsoTec superior insulation, are heat-sealed and are leak-proof. We found that our lunches stayed very fresh and had no issues with leaks, etc. As a mom, I love how durable and easy to care for these lunch kits are, and my kids LOVE the bright, fun designs.

We also received two matching FUNtainer food jars to pack in our lunch kits. These are FABULOUS! They can be used with either hot or cold items and have a double wall vacuum insulation to insure that your food stays the right temperature for as long as possible. They have an unbreakable stainless steel interior and are perfect for the bumps and bruises of every day life with kids! Another great feature is that the food jars are sweat-proof so you won't have any moisture collecting inside your lunch kit or backpack.

The last lunch accessory we received were some FUNtainer bottles. These also have the double wall vacuum insulation and keep drinks cold for a loooong time. Once again, they are durable and very easy to use! Each FUNtainer bottle has a push button lid with a pop-up straw. I find these are great for preschool-age or older as they are not a sippy cup anymore, yet they still will keep the drink inside if it is accidentally tipped over.

Thermos has a bunch of really fun and affordable lunch kits and lunch accessories! With items like the food jar, they also make packing a litter less lunch a lot easier. The insulation that most of their items have also makes lunch-packing (and lunch-eating) a lot easier and more enjoyable! Head over to Thermos and take a look at their products - in our opinion they get a double thumbs up! :)

WIN IT!
Thermos is giving one lucky winner their choice of EITHER a Batman lunch kit or a Barbie lunch kit. In order to get one entry into the contest, head over to Thermos and let us know which item you'd love to have for the back to school season.

Silver Hills Sprouted Bread

For those of you who didn't win the Silver Hills Bakery giveaway, they are running their own giveaway. Check out the details here.

Bummis on the bum ~ GIVEAWAY!

In our experimentation with cloth diapers, we've come across a model that's really suited us well. Bummis is a well-known Canadian manufacturer of cloth diapers and diapering accessories. They've added some new products to their lineup, both made by the Tots Bots factory in Glasgow, Scotland: the Easy Fit and the Pocket Tot. Bummis started out as a home business in the 1980s and has grown a lot since then! Something I liked about Bummis was that they produce everything they can in their Canadian factory, source as many North American products as possible, and work with reputable companies in the UK and Pakistan for products they just can't find here. I really like the idea of supporting Canadian business as much as possible.

We had a chance to try out the Easy Fit diaper. I think Daniel's favourite feature of this diaper is that it's orange - the first colour he knew and his favourite so far! The Easy Fit comes in 5 colours plus white, in case your child's favourite colour isn't orange! :) What I really like about this diaper is that I don't have to fuss with liners - the liner is attached to the diaper and folds really easily into a pocket. Even better, it comes out BY ITSELF in the wash! This means it washes up great and dries quickly. You can adjust the liner so the absorbency is where your baby needs it the most (watch the video on the webpage to get an idea how).

We've never had any leaking issues with this diaper; there's a layer of rayon from bamboo fibers next to the skin, which is super soft and absorbs up to 70% more than cotton. The other layer of the liner is polyester microfibre. Along the sides of the liner are anti-wicking, soft brushed polyester side guards to prevent compression wetness.

The diaper is adjustable in size - it fits from 8-35 lbs with 3 rows of adjusting snaps. The Tiny Fit is available as a separate diaper for babies from 5-12 lbs.

Another thing I like about this diaper is the fit. Daniel is nearly 2, very active, and doesn't need or like something that hinders his movement - believe me, he lets us know! This diaper seems to fit trimmer than some around the bum.

WIN IT!

Bummis is giving away an Easy Fit diaper to one of our Glimpse readers! To enter, please visit the Bummis website and comment on either a) another Bummis product you'd like to try or b) a feature of the Easy Fit you think would be great for your child.

EXTRA ENTRIES - Please leave an additional comment for each extra entry.

Stepping Stones Together ~ Giveaway!

Having a beginner reader in the house is a lot of fun! Rowan tries to read almost everything he sees, and I love watching it 'click' for him.

We were recently asked to review a great beginner reader program called Stepping Stones Together. Rowan has picked up on it so fast, and he LOVES being able to read these stories!

Stepping Stones Together is an online reading program designed by a mom who wanted something that was accessible to parents. The stories are all printable, and you can actually put your child's name right on the book. There are also printable incentive charts, flash cards, and certificates to encourage your child to read. And because parents are busy people, this program is designed to take only about 15 minutes per day!

We started in Section A, where Rowan really excelled. The stories use great pictures to help illustrate, so if you child does have a problem with a word, they can often figure out what it is from looking at the picture. This really forms a connection with the word, which I think is great.

Rowan was so excited to see all the different story topics and titles, and he got to choose which story he wanted to read each day. The way the system is set up, you read the book together one day, answering the comprehension questions. The second day the child reads the same story, just to ensure that they are really learning the words, and comprehending. Rowan and I deviated a bit from this system, as he seemed to find the reading really easy. He read as many as 3 stories some days, and still could read them no problem the second day.

After reading each story, there are some comprehension questions to challenge your child to think about what he/she read. Rowan is still working on this part :) He's excited to read, but doesn't have a lot of patience for answering the questions. He just wants me to get him another story!

We decided to challenge ourselves and try a story from Section C. Rowan did really well! He definitely struggled with some of the words, and the comprehension part was also hard for him, but he loved it!

I think Stepping Stones Together is a great way to encourage your child to excel in reading. It would be a great tool for Homeschooling as well as a great addition to Public or Private School. Teachers in school don't always have the time to ensure that our children are learning to read, and this is a great way to get involved.

WIN IT!
We get to give away one free membership to Stepping Stones Together! This includes access to the website for a full year. What a fantastic prize! In order to enter, please let us know how old your children are, and why you think Stepping Stones Together would be a great fit for you!

Spin & Twirl with Hopscotch ~ GIVEAWAY!

Spinning, twirling & dancing...our 2 year old is just starting to love these things! :) She's also learned that trying to run straight after twirling doesn't usually work out so well. ;) But that doesn't stop her from spinning round & round again next time. Silly Pants recently added the MOST ADORABLE new line of dresses to their website. The creations of Hopscotch Designs are undeniably fun, whimsical, and gorgeous. Emily received the Kaleidoscope dress from the Charlotte collection. It's vibrant, fun and comes with a fully lined skirt with a crinoline. The dress also features a wide sash with a gorgeous flower on it to add a little extra flair. Besides that, we just love the pattern of the Hopscotch dress. It would make any little girl feel like a princess, yet is comfortable enough to wear around home too! It is made from 100% cotton - so no itchy fabrics will be touching your little one's skin. One of my other favorite features of the Hopscotch line is that their clothes are machine washable. Dresses that can be thrown into the washing machine are very important to a busy mama like myself! ;) We really have fallen in love with the Hopscotch Design dresses. You can definitely tell that the people who create them are passionate about what they do! The quality, fabrics, and styles of their dresses are unlike any others that I've seen, and if we didn't already have a closet of dresses, you can be sure that I'd be slowly filling it up with dresses from Hopscotch Designs.

Silly Pants has a great variety of other items as well. I've been SO impressed with the quality, practicality, and uniqueness of the products that Silly Pants carries. There is definitely something for everyone and so many of their products would be fabulous gifts as well!

WIN IT!
Silly Pants is giving away a Cremino Rabbit Trudi Plush Toy! These little rabbits are as soft and snuggly as they come! In order to get ONE entry, head over to Silly Pants and let us know which IN STOCK Trudi Item you love the most. (click here to view these items).

Soles - footwear for wherever the little feet go!

Wouldn't it be great to find a type of footwear that could protect your little one's feet, be worn in dry and wet situations and be washable? Here it is!

These great socks with a gripped sole go on and off easily, even when they're soaking wet. Daniel has great traction at the spray pad or the beach, and I don't have to worry about him stubbing his toe or stepping on something and hurting his foot.

Some features of Soles:

•Ideal for indoor and outdoor wear
•Walk, run, swim, and so much more
•Breathable sock and rubber sole provide traction for activities and comfort for children
•Lightweight, machine washable
•Available in a variety of colours and sizes

Daniel received a pair of Soles at the beginning of the summer and we've been trying them out in all sorts of locations. They seem comfortable and don't interfere with his playing at all.

Playful Peanut ~ Giveaway!

Rowan is all about letters and words these days. In just three short weeks, he starts school for the first time! I'm so proud of him, and how much he has already learned at home.

A toy that Rowan recently received that is really making learning fun is the Playful Peanut Alphabet I Spy bag. I've seen other I Spy bags, and they sure are cute. However, Rowan lost interest pretty quickly, finding the little objects inside. Now that he gets to find letters, he's super excited!

You can start with finding each letter in order, then move onto words. Or have a competition with a friend and take turns finding letters or words.

The I Spy bag comes with a great laminated list of things to find, which makes it a motivational game for kids too. I know I love checking things off of a list, and so do kids!

We take a lot of 3 hour road trips, and Rowan is always getting bored after the first hour. This is a great, simple thing for him to do in the van. Something without a million little pieces to get lost. I know it will get lots of love in this house!

WIN IT!
Playful Peanut would like to offer one lucky Glimpse reader their very own I Spy The Alphabet bag. In order to enter, just let us know one other product that you love from Playful Peanut.

We ordered a pair of soft souls for Tate since he's long outgrown any of the regular ones we have. He was thrilled to have his own pair of 'slippers' again. Not only do they have one of his favorite animals on them (a sweet 'lil puppy!), but they also have his name stitched on them and that sure makes them extra special! These are perfect for fall, or winter, or even for a cool summer evening or running around downstairs on the colder cement floors. Tate's soft soul shoes have run many laps around our home already! ;) The quality, durability and comfortability of these shoes can't be beat. Especially when they come personalized for you in every way (color, designs, and names!) Here's what Soft Soul has to say about their shoes:

Of course, even the lining spares no expense and is made with cozy shearling and a real sheepskin band. These would be a practical yet fun gift to give someone this fall...or they'd even make a great stocking stuffer come Christmas!

Painting Her Little Piggy's ~ GIVEAWAY!

Clips, dresses, shoes and accessories in general have started to "flood" our home ever since we had our first girl. (I can only imagine what's going to happen now that we have two little girls! ;) ) I must say though, that I love every minute of it. Emily recently received a new accessory that we've never owned before...a bottle of Piggy Paint and Remover for her finger & toenails! There IS a reason why we've never owned this before, and that is because every kind of nail polish that I've ever seen is loaded with chemicals, and it smells SO strong when you apply it. Definitely not my choice product to use on our little girls. Shoefly Footwear recently introduced us to Piggy Paint! It is a specially made nail polish that is completely natural and it is made from creation itself! You'll find zero toxic chemicals and absolutely no formaldehyde, acetone or other harmful ingredients. But wait! It gets even better. Piggy paint is also non-toxic, low odor (yay!), made from a water-based formula, hypoallergenic, cruelty free, and it dries to a hard, durable finish. Put all that together, and I say you've got a winning nail polish for kids AND adults alike! The Piggy Paint Nail Polish Remover is equally as natural and has the same great benefits! It contains no solvents, is also low odor and hypoallergenic. In addition to this the remover even contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to give your nails an extra boost. We found that both the polish and the remover lived up to our expectations, were easy to use and made those little nails sparkle. :)

Shoefly Footwear also carries a great selection of footwear for both boys and girls! So if you're not into the nail polish stage quite yet, take a peek at their shoes which exude quality and comfortability - the kind that are made for running, jumping, climbing and exploring!

WIN IT!
Shoefly Footwear is giving one of our readers a bottle of Piggy Paint and a Bottle of Remover! In order to get one entry, head over to Shoefly and let us know what your favorite color of Piggy Paint is.

Battling the bulge of childhood obesity

According to the Childhood Obesity Foundation, over 26 per cent (or 1.6 million) of Canadian children and youth are considered overweight or obese.

Lack of physical activity and too much time spent watching TV, playing video games or in front of a computer increases the likelihood of a child becoming overweight or obese. Poor food choices can also have a great impact on a child’s health. According to Health Canada, 59 per cent of children and adolescents consumed fruit and vegetables fewer than five times a day making them more likely to be overweight or obese than those who ate these foods more frequently.

“Children need a steady stream of nutrients and calories to fulfill their body’s energy needs,” says Cara Rosenbloom, registered dietitian. “Packing a healthy lunch that offers something from each of the four food groups is a great way to make sure that children get the nutrients they need. Healthy meal choices not only decrease a child’s chance of becoming obese or overweight, but also ensures better overall health.”

Parents can keep kids healthy by following these obesity-battling tips:
  • Mealtime: Children should always have breakfast – people who skip breakfast are more than four times more likely to be obese than those who eat breakfast daily. Packing a healthy lunch and snacks helps parents manage what foods and drinks children consume as well as portion control. By purchasing healthy meal choices in bulk and then breaking them down to create meals throughout the week using reusable lunch products, parents can cut costs while also remaining environmentally-friendly. Yogurt and fruit are great options, but they also need to stay fresh until lunchtime. Products like Thermos’ line of insulated FUNtainer food jars will ensure food stays fresh and safe all day from bacteria build-up.
  • Activate Activity: It is essential to have children participate in at least one hour of physical activity each day. Parents should set a good example by taking part in an activity and should also help facilitate it by either encouraging children to get out and play or by signing them up for a sports league or sports classes.
  • Healthy Hydration: There’s no question that kids love their sugary juices and pop, but these drinks can contain anywhere from nine to 11 teaspoons of sugar. Parents should save these beverages for “special occasions” and make water the go-to drink for kids. A great way to get kids to drink more water is to pack a reusable water bottle with lunches. Insulated FUNtainer hydration bottles are BPA-free and will keep drinks refreshingly cold all day and also come in a variety of different designs to suit every child’s taste.
  • Not so fast: Fast food meals offer little to no nutritional value for anyone. While it’s nearly impossible to place an all-out ban on fast food, the amount consumed should be very limited.

Sobey's Summer Grilling!

Summer seems to be the perfect time for grilling - cook the food outdoors, keep the heat out of the kitchen and enjoy the great barbecued taste! This summer, Sobeys is featuring many cool new grilling recipes in their magazine, Inspired. The recipes showcase many great Compliments-brand products. As well, Sobeys is running a Summer Grilling Blogger Program, and asked me to take part! :) YEAH! We love to grill, and this was the perfect chance to try out some new things!

I was given a choice of 2 out of 4 recipes, so I picked the 2 I thought our family would like the most. Seeing how well everyone, including the kids, ate the meal, I think I picked the right ones! :) We had guests that night too, and normally I'm not brave enough to try a new recipe for guests, but the instructions were so clear we thought we'd give it a go, and everything worked out just like it said in the recipe! In fact, everything got eaten so quickly, it was all gone before I had a chance to take a picture! :-)

Our main dish was Maple-Planked Salmon With Carrot Slaw. We like fish, and salmon is one of our favourites, but it can turn out a bit dry on the barbecue. I wasn't sure how the salmon would go with barbecue sauce, but this is certainly a hit! We didn't even have any leftovers! The maple barbecue sauce is great on the salmon, and the fish was moist and flavourful. Plus, cooking it on the plank kept the grill a bit cleaner too! We've cooked on a plank before, and it was sort of a smoky affair that ended in very charred planks on fire, which was a bit too much excitement on our patio. So this time, I soaked the planks in the sink all afternoon, weighting them down with a heavy plate to be sure they stayed under water. The recipe calls for Maple Grilling Planks, in keeping with the Canadiana theme, but I couldn't find them in our local Sobeys so we used Cedar Grilling Planks instead.  Next time we make this salmon we'd love to use the Maple wood and compare the taste, but I think it would be hard to improve on what we had! Richard was the grilling expert that evening (as he mostly is) and he followed the recipe times exactly, and the fish turned out PERFECT! Just when he was thinking the fish was done, by feel and look, it was the same time as specified in the recipe, so if you're not certain about grilling fish, you can certainly rely on the recipe to give you a great meal.

For the Carrot Slaw, I picked up 2 bags of match-stick carrots to save myself some prep time. We liked the salad, but I think next time I would grate the carrots to make them a bit finer. The taste was good, and you can't get an easier slaw recipe, I don't think! We served our meal buffet-style, so we didn't serve the salmon on the slaw as suggested in the recipe, but you certainly could if you wanted!

For dessert we enjoyed Glazed Mochachino Ice Cream Cake. YUM! Everyone here loves ice cream and chocolate, so it was no surprise everyone asked for seconds! You could vary the ice cream flavours in the cake easily to your family's preferences, but I thought I'd try it exactly as written and we really liked it. There are some things I would do differently next time, just to make it a bit easier to cut and serve though: instead of cookie crumbs with fudge sauce for the crust, I think I'd just use either graham cracker crumbs or chocolate wafer crumbs and melted butter. It was tricky to cut through the crust as it got so hard when frozen. And, with all that ice cream and chocolate sauce, I don't think we'd notice less sugar in the crust at all! :) One recipe tip is to refreeze the cake in between layers, and I think that would have made the assembly a bit easier, but the kids were busy while I was putting this together, so I thought I'd just keep going! I made my own fudge sauce using Compliments-brand chocolate chips and whipping cream, and you have to work really quickly when spreading the sauce on the ice cream cake as it thickens up very fast.

All in all, it was a very successful meal! Our guests and kids raved about the food, and I will definitely be making these recipes again! Check out Sobeys website and their Compliments-brand website for great ideas and recipes! Look for the current Inspired magazine in your local Sobeys, or sign up online to receive it by mail or email! There are some great burger ideas that I'd like to try, as well as a lot of "keep cool" summer recipes and ideas!

As a small but important aside, shopping in Sobeys is always a pleasure, as the staff is so friendly and helpful. I couldn't find all the ingredients I needed this time, and with 2 kids in the card I didn't feel like spending time looking, so I found a store employee, who then led us around the store finding the things for us!

Live Clean Baby ~ Giveaway (2 winners!)

We all love to find great products when we shop. Sometimes we find a new product, and know very little about, making us hesitant to try it. We've also all seen companies that claim to have great natural products for babies, which actually turn out to be not so natural, or not so great. And I know I personally love the convenience of being able to find a great natural product right at the grocery store or pharmacy.

Live Clean is a great Canadian company that has been making some awesome natural products available right at our favorite stores. I discovered their product line a couple years ago, and have used a few of them. I particularly enjoy the Live Clean Baby Tearless Shampoo and Wash, and the Live Clean Baby Moisturizing Baby Lotion. They are my baby products of choice.

Live Clean Baby recently came out with a great new addition to their line. They sent me both of their brand new Live Clean Baby Bar Soaps to try out. These soaps are gentle and effective. I have actually personally been using the soap, as I have very sensitive skin. It has been great for me too, and I actually enjoy the soft scent of the scented bar.

The Live Clean Mission is this:
"Go green without compromising performance. Our mission is to provide a line of products that contribute to a greener planet and perform at the highest level. Live Clean is a unique eco-friendly beauty care line that delivers exceptional results using natural, plant based ingredients. Live Clean formulations are made with a minimum of 96% replenishable, renewable and sustainable plant ingredients...as good for the earth as they are for your body."

I have certainly found that they are achieving their mission, and I will continue to purchase Live Clean products for my family.

Live Clean is free of SLS, DEA, parabens, other harsh preservatives, as well as phthalates. It is also vegan and cruelty-free.

Live Clean Baby is available across Canada at Loblaws, Fortino’s, Zehr’s, Extra Foods, Real Canadian Superstores, Real Atlantic Superstores, Provigo, Maxi, Proxim, Wal-Mart, Metro, Rexall Pharma Plus, Guardian, IDA, London Drugs, Save-On Foods, Overwaitea, Lawton’s Drugs and Sobey’s (Atlantic provinces).

KIOKKO ~ Giveaway! (2 winners)

Anyone else out there have a super messy eater? My little Bria, cute as she is, constantly stains her clothes with food. I'm glad she's feeding herself, but she sure can be messy.

As you can imagine, I was glad to have the chance to review some bibs. I received 2 great bibs, and a handful of super soft and pretty washcloths from Kiokko.

Let's just say, Bria put the bibs to the test right away :) I'm really impressed with how they have held up. Still super soft and pretty, even months later!

The washcloths have also come in very handy. I keep them in a basket in our dining room, so they are right there when we have a mess to clean off of little hands and faces. I love the great prints, and the terrycloth side is perfect for cleaning up the difficult messes.

Kiokko also offers blankets, burp cloths, nursing covers, and pacifier clips. Everything comes in awesome, fun fabrics, and is sewn with care.

WIN IT!

Woodland Rogue

With fair-skinned, red-headed children, it's incredibly important to keep them protected from the sun. Sunscreen helps, and so do hats. But who wants just any old boring hat?

I've been looking around at different kids hats for a while, and came across these awesome adjustable hats from Woodland Rogue. I was sent the very unique hat with three brims, which is perfect for Bria! It creates far more shade for her than a regular hat.

I'm really impressed with the quality of this hat. It looks to be sewn well, and should hold up for many years. Which is great, since it's adjustable, and will grow as Bria grows.

Woodland Rogue has a few different styles of kids hats, as well as some awesome looking diaper bags. You won't be disappointed with any purchase from Woodland Rogue!

Savor the Moment with Prova!

A few months ago we welcomed a new baby girl into our home. :) What a joy she has been! Of course, we wanted to share that joy and her sweetness with all our friends and family, and we couldn't think of any better (or easier!) way to do that than to create a baby announcement photo card. Nothing caught our eye at any of the local stores though...and with three young kids at home I just couldn't seem to find the time to create my own simple photo card. That's when I came across Prova Designs - a fabulous CANADIAN business that will create photo cards and announcements for you - and at a very reasonable price too! They put together a perfectly pink and precious baby announcement for our little girl and we are so proud to be able to give these to our family and friends! The owner of Prova Designs was wonderful to work with too. Very easy-going and willing to make changes when something wasn't quite how we pictured it.

There are several options that Prova Designs offers their customers as well. You can go for the cheapest route if you'd like...a custom template using photos with a few basic enhancements; or you can go another step up and get a custom template with extra photo enhancements; or for a small fee, you can have one of your regular photos turned into a professional one! This option is much cheaper than hiring a professional photographer...and we all know that kids and babies just don't like to co-operate for the "real" photographers most days anyways. :) One of my favorite parts about Prova Designs though is the fact that it was created for frugal people (like myself! ;) ). They provide you with the option of printing out your own photo cards at a local store. So that means you only pay a fee for the creation of the photo card and it is emailed directly to you so can print out as many as you'd like for a cheap price of around 19 cents a picture! You can't beat that. :) (Of course, they can also print and send your photo cards directly to you as well).

Prova Designs offers more than just baby announcements! You can also order wedding announcements, adoption announcements and more. Their designs are all unique and special, and you can be sure that Prova Designs will do their best to make your photo cards just the way you'd like!

BUY IT!
Prova Designs is offering all our readers a great discount! In order to receive 10% off all orders simply mention Glimpse Reviews in the 'message' section of the order form. Expires September 30, 2010.
