Scholastic Monday - The Queen's Secret

Kings and Queens...these are two characters that kids always love to pretend they are! There's something special about a king or a queen...or even a prince or princess that little boys and girls seem to love. This week for Scholastic Monday we're featuring a FABULOUS book from Scholastic Canada called The Queen's Secret by Frieda Wishinsky. This book has been a favorite in our home since the first time we read it...and yes, I will admit...even I love this one! Everything about it is perfect for children. It's simple, colorful, down-to-earth, easy to read with rhyming words and includes all the things that kids love (you know, like a red racing car, rubber boots, strawberry pie, etc.) :)

The book starts out with...

In every picture,
In every land,
The queen always held
A purse in her hand.

As the story goes on, the little girl, Kay, wonders and wonders about what it could be that the Queen carries around in her purse. The book ends with the Queen coming to town and shaking Kay's hand...but OOPS! She drops her purse and it opens up wide...and Kay gets a peek of what's inside. Curious? I won't give it away, but I have to say that the ending is absolutely adorable and that secret item that the Queen carries in her purse is something that will resonate with every youngster! :)

Scholastic Canada chose wisely when they added this book to their collection! It has been loved much in our home already and I'm sure we'll be reading it MANY more times in the days to come. Oh, I also should mention - it's even written by a Canadian author! I would highly recommend The Queen's Secret for anyone with little ones in their home!
