I'm a bit of a fabric junkie :) I have a problem with beautiful designer fabrics. I can't stop buying them! My only real issues with it is that it's very hard to find a reasonably priced Canadian fabric shop. Most of the time fabric retailers charge more in Canada, due to importing costs. This kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth! Why does everything have to be more expensive in Canada?
I was very excited when Cheryl of Pink Panda Fabrics contacted me! This is what Cheryl has to say about why she chooses to sell fabrics in Canada.
"Why - because there is a lack of modern, fashion forward fabrics available to budget conscious Canadians (online and brick and mortar stores). Just because we live north of the border doesn't mean we should be sewing with grandma-ish fabrics (I love my grandmas and all, I just don't want to make stuff with their fabric stash). You know what I'm talking about- the lacey, plaid, pastel pink and baby blue teddy bear fabrics. ;) "
Cheryl sent me two 1 yard pieces of fabric for the review, and I already had a chance to whip a little something up with one piece! I love sewing with quilting cottons. They are simple, breathable, and sew very easily. I made this little dress in same evening that I received the material. I just couldn't resist! I'm still dreaming up ideas for the second piece. Any ideas? Pink Panda Fabrics is currently found on Etsy, though in June 2009, you will be able to shop directly from http://pinkpandafabrics.ca. Once the second shop is open, Canadians will be able to pay in Canadian funds, for the current exchange rate.
"It's about time Canadians make online purchases in their own currency without having to pay outrageous conversion rates, shipping rates and customs/duty!"
Cheryl sells only online right now, and ships everything from her smoke and pet free studio, so it will arrive at your door smelling fresh. Cheryl is a former web developer, IT project manager and software programmer who changed careers after the birth of her daughter last April. She is now a WAHM running Pink Panda Fabrics and a web consulting business where she codes, tests and designs websites for other mompreneurs.
She is also the tech mom at www.YummyMummyClub.ca (an online magazine geared towards moms and run by former MuchMusic VJ Erica Ehm).
